SWEET PEA AND CARNATION SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The seventh' annual meeting of the Canterbury Sweet -Pea and Carnation Society was held last night, Mr W. J. Jenkin presiding over a good attendance. The committee's report stated that, on account of the very dry- summer experienced, the display of sweet peas had not been up to the usual standard, but 'here had been an exceptionally fine exhibit of carnations. The judging by popular vote of the table decora-, tions at the show had been a novel feature. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £21 6a sd. The chairman moved the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, and congratulated the Society on a successful year. He urged that the show should be a two-day one. Mr G. Pcnlington seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr J. Douglas; president, Mr W. J. Jenkin; vice-presidents, Mrs G. E. Rhodes, Mrs W. Carey Hill, Miss L. V. Tabart, Messrs H. Hammond, E. T. Reece H. R. Best, O. C. Cox, S. Smith, W. R. Webb, C. W. Hervey, A. H. Wilder, A. Kaye, C. Allajd, J. -A. Brown, D. Bradbury, T. E. Whitfield, W. Martin, A. C. Nottingham, A. E. J*>we, B. C. Pratt, D. Burgess, W. Butler, E. H. Wyles, F. Warburton, Mr Justice Herdman, Hon. C. A. C. Hardy, M.L.C., and Sergeant Bird; hon. treasurer, Mr A. S. Ward; hon. secretary, Mr W. Fenner; hon. auditor, Mr C. W. Hervey; committee, Messrs H. Landery, W. M. Swanston, G. P-eniington, F. Mulhollaind, W. Adams, R. Malcolm, and J. Adams. The- chairman urged the reinstatement of the oottage garden competition. A- lengthy discussion ensued, the general opinion being unfavourable to the proposal, but it was ultimately _ agreed to refer the matter to tho incoming committee with a .suggestion that the competition, > if held, should be held under better conditions. After discussion it was decided to hold two shows —one in December for sweet peas, and on© in January or February for carnations.
