STREET STALL-HOLDERS.
TO TI:K i;niTiin OF PRESS." Sii".—Last week the retailors of Caristchurch were requested by the flavor to close their establishments, so that thev and their employees mighr .ioin in the great civic welcome to the I'rinne of "Wales, and they willingly did so. But it must have b.vn very gallin;; to "-omo of tVni to see itinerant stallholders in the Square and other prominent positions doing a thriving in uags_ badges, and oilier patriotic emblems. It. is to bo supposed that theso stallholders carry on their business under license from, or 1-y permission of, the Council, and it seems only fair that such permission should be contingent on their observing the same hours as the retail .shops" selling the same goods. Th.e-e travelling salesmen pay no rates or taxes, and earrv profits away from the cHy, so it is unjust- and very bad policy to favour them at the expense of local retailers. If the Mayor wishes shonkepners to close on similar occasions in the future, it is to be honodthat he will take steps to protect them in this wav from unfair competition.—Yours, etc. * i ' JUSTICE.
