SEAMEN'S DISPUTE.
SETTLEMENT EXPECTED. (By Cable.—Press Aseociatio-.—Copyright.) (Australicn and N./.. <J; ble As«nu.i;ion.) MELBOURNE, July 24. In the Houso of Representatives tho Hon. L. E. Groom asked members not to press for a statement regarding tho seamen's strike, as tho Ministry, in view of certain developments, desired to leave the way open for a peaceful settlement. A deputation from the Union Conference waited on tlio Hon. E. D. Millen, asking for a conference between tho Government, the owners, and the seamen. Cabinet subsequently mot and discussed the position. Although no official announcement has been made a hopeful feeling prevails that a settlement is imminent. A meeting of seamen agreed not to resume until Walsh was released.
