A BRIDGE OF REMEMBRANCE.

TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir, —The idea of retaining tho arches erected for the Peace celebrations as permanent ornaments in different parts of the city is 'worthy of consideration if thev are sufficiently stable for such a purpose. They have been tho moans of our recognising the enhancing effect an arch has on our city streets. One wonders why Christchurch - , by nature adapted to arched bridges, as the river flows through the centre of the city, and its banks are considered the mam beauty spots of the town, has been so remiss in not adopting this mode of architecture. Sir Frederick Treves, in his book, 'The Other Side of tho Lantern," de- '■ sennas a. bxid&Q in Jason. cl»*rroingly

named the Briaga of Remombrance, approaching the Island of Leave Taking, tho latter ornamented with two stone lanterns. If that idea were ad-oped hore, and tho site chosen, the Cash el street bridge, how appropriate it would be. I chooso this silo in preference to all others, on account of its being the bridgo all our soldiers have uassed ever, therefore tho most historic bridge in Christchurch.

I do net know what funds aro available for such memorials, or whether it would lie neccssarv to malco a special appeal, but I am quite sure if an appeal were needed the response would be worthy of the Christchurch peoplo. The desism of the stone arch and bridge need not bo too ornate, but that, I think, can be safely left in the hands of our local architects. But I sincerely hope they will not omit to how in rou<xh stony on the~arch, "The Bridgfe of Remembrance."—Yours, etc. L.M.I.
