CASUALTIES
FOUND DEAD. . After the Rangiora police wero informed by a boy named Stanley Harris that ho n;:d discovered the dead bodj' of a man on a shingle spit in the Ashley River they went yesterday morning with a search party, and after working over tlio riverbed, iSergt. McKay discovered the body on mo spot it had been seen first. Evidently the lad had mistaken the spot wiien he returned with the police on the previous evening. Tbo body was identified as that of a returned soldier, Walter Allen, aged 42, third son of M- J. Allen, High street, Rangiora. He had been missing since Sunday morning. Tho deceased was one of four brothers who served at tho front. He returned some months ago suffering from shell shock. His health did not improve, and ho suffered from insomnia. About 11 p.m. on Saturday h«3 was given some supper in bed, but next morning lie was missing. It is supposed that his nervous state was adversely affected by tho Peace fireworlds. An inquest will be held at 10 a.m. to-dav.
About 8 30 a.m. yesterday, Mr John Fahey, caretaker of the Farmers' Saleyards, discovered an old woman, ljping apparently dead,.in the doorway or the ladies' waiting-room of the sale.ynrds. He sent for tho police, and Dr. Crooke was summoned, but it was found that, life was quite extinct, and tho body was removed to tho morgue, where an inquest will be held at 9 a.m. to-day, after a post mortem examination lias been mado. The deceased was an old age pensioner named Mary Rouse, who had been living with Mrs Green, at 131 Manchester street. Her husband resides in Rangiora. (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, July 23. J. Sharpies, a married man, was knocked down by a tram car in Queon street. He was very seriously injured and was removed to the hospital.
