THE ASSOCIATION GAME. AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. The Brown Shield, tho trophy on whicfo all the Association football centres, in Now Zealand make an annual assault, will bo tha prize for which Auckland and Canterbury will do battle at English Park this afternoon. Canterbury are the present holders of tho Shield, and they have Quito a good team this year, while tho Aucklanders have a big reputation. Their meeting is oertain 10 result in a very fine exhibition of Association football, and the match will, no doubt, bo witnessed by a largo crowd of enthusiasts, particularly aa Rugby fttid League games are not being playoct to-day. RUGBY AND LEAGUE MATCHES POSTPONED. Owing to the heavy nature of the grounds after the recent rough weather, the Canterbury Rugby Union and Canterbury Rugby League matches set down for to-day have been postponed. LEAGUE GAME IN WELLINGTON. (tress association telegram.) WELLINGTON, Juno 27. The Reserves Committee of the City Council reported in favour of granting the use of the ±sa3in Reserve to League and Association footballers for three days, with the right to charge admission. btrong opposition was shown to the League on the ground that it encouraged'' professionalism, and also did not encourage young p.aycrs, for. whom the game_ as played under Leaguo rules was too exacting. Others pointed out that the League m England had not hurt either Rugby or Association football, but on the casting vote of the Mayor the' League was refused use of the ground.
