ATTACKED.

Further rioting occurred on the wharves. When several volunteers were leaving, a crowd of strikers and women attacked them and severely dealt with them. Later in the day a largo force of returned soldiers marched through the streets and requested the shopkeepers not to serve the police with provisions. Towards evening ft policeman "was attacked by returned soldiers and badly injured. Other police came to his assistance, and, after firing sevoral shots, drove the rioters off. A number of police were injured. Reports were rdteived later that the soldiers were organising an attack,on the police station. A meeting of railway workers decided to support the lumpers in every way. SETTLEMENT PROBABLE. (Received Mnv 6th, 10 p.m.) FREMANTLE, May 6. As a result of a conferenco between the men's representatives and the Government; it is hoped that the wharf trouble will be settled immediately. The withdrawal of the police lias had a calming effect. A meeting of tho two sections of returned soldiers ended in free fights, one section siding with the lumpers, and tho other with law and order. The secretary of the Transport Workers' Federation states that unless a settlement iii the Fremantle dispute is arranged, that which the Federation is most anxious to avoid will he forced uptm it. It is feared that if a settlement is not arrived at the trouble will assume an international aspect, as the Federation is in constant communication with the transport wdrkers of Great Britain.
