Mortham lasted long enough to win all but by a good length from Palamon, Belair being three length's away third. Time, lm 13s. Winner bred by owner, and, trained by S. Triiford. NOTES ON THE RACING. Achilledcs was sent out an odds-on favourite for the Second-Hurdle Handicap, and he duly . von, but he was greatly assisted by San Sebastian, who raced alongside him for nearly a mile, and showed him how to time his fences. San Sebastian collapsed after going a little more than a mile, owing to wanting a race or two. Kimbolton then joined the favourito, and raced with him nntil they, landed over the last fence, but he could not go any farther, and Achilledss ran home an easy winner. Silver Shield, who finished third, ■was alwayß well np, but he is getting into the tail end of his days, jind is not likely to show better form. Sir Medallist, who was. kept a long way back in the early part of the race, was running on at tho finish, and should win a race before long. All the acceptors for the Second Hack Wol■ter went to the post, and it was a really good betting race. The start was good, but Naughty Queen, who had been troubled by the heat on the first day, aoon ran to the front, and was never troubled. Jingo and Zephland found their weight too much to carry at the pace set, but Bonsign. Irish Elegance, and Placrl all galloped well, and will win in their turn. As usual, Lady Links wa«. slow to find her feet, but once going she showed & fine turn of speed, and only just failed to get second money. She is looking somewhat overdone now, but is certain to win races before the season closcs. The Autumn Handicap was a great race. As is usual with him, Red Tape began slowud vu cmb tr"'!** 3 whiltt DayUma.

on the rails, with Lionskin alongside, and Claverhouse tucked in behind, made the pace very solid. Daytime was first into the straight, but Lionskin challenged strongly, and 100 yards from the post looked to have him beaten, in fact, the filly's rider appeared to think Claverhouse, who was finishing well on the outside, was his most dangoroua opponent. However, Emerson sat rode Daytime hard with the whip, and the Hymettua gelding responded so gamely that he got up to win by a head, with Claverhouse half a length away. Daytime wae purchased for £250 about a week ago by the North Island owner, Mr H. W. Brown, and he was not long in returning £230- of his purchase money. Daytime has been owned by several people, ami lias always paid his way. Kilbarry, who has only raced three times this eeason, has won twice and been second on the other occasion, and he looks likely to go on winning. C. Emerson rode a nice roco on the Oamaru-owned gelding in the Juvenile Handicap, and deserved to win, but Starlike would bavo beaten him had her rfcjer made Kilbarry go faster in the early part of the race, for she was only beaten a head, and was' going- faster than the winner at the finish. Both are really good sorts, and will win better claEs races before they finish raoin.fr. The start for the Winchmore Welter was perfect, but Yee immediately rushed to the front and, eetting a great pace, eoon had the field strung out, with Micky Free as his nearest attendant. After going four furlongs Yes stopped, when Micky Free took up the running, and ran home a very easy winner.

The pacers that went out to contest the Melrose Trot were mostly youngsters. Eulius, a three-year-old gelding by Emilius—Eulogy, waa made a good favourite, and ho just lasted lone; enough to win from Day, who would certainly have beaten him if she had left the mark promptly. Aa it happened ah© lost a lot cf gTOund before striking a gait. The winner ie a plain, but usefullooking gelding, and is subject to a lot of imnrovement. Of the two-vear-olds engaged Wildbriar, a chestnut gelding by Wildwood Jr.—Aileen, a sister to the great Evelyn, looked the best, and he will win when ready. Milda Pointer, a diminutive_ daughter of Logan Pointer from Milda, is a very nice mover, has speed, and plenty of determination. She stayed on well, much better, in fact, than one would expect from her. Her inches will always be against her, but sho will win races. Bronwood, a -chestnut celding by Wildwood Jr.—The Broncho, is not nearly ready, but he showed a fine. turn of speed for half a mile. He then tired, but when more eeasoned will win. Cerberus was cent out & warm favourite for tho Moreton Hack Handicap, but ho was not eeasoned enough for such a task. Always well up he could never shake off Mythology and Lady Superior, and the three were hard at ■ it. when Moorabbe ran past them, and went on to win easily. Tunic joined the three mentioned, and the quartette put up a, mighty finish lor eecond place. Fifty yards from the post they were level, and they flashed past the post with their heads like four steps of stairs,. _ Mortham was just moving l when the barrier rose for the-Wakanni Handicap, which enabled him to head off Belair and get the rails. Palamon jumped outwards when the barrier rose, and lost two or three lengths. Mortham eoon had a lead of some lengths, which enabled him to win all out from Palamon, who may be considered the unlucky horse of the j race. ... .

Peter Bell, Lady Esma, Brighton, Perthetta, Baron Adelaide, and College Green wro withdrawn from the First Amateur Handicap. Rito was sent out favourite, with Exmoor also coming in for solid support. The winner, Delville Wood, was always in a good position, and won comfortably at the finish. He is a useful three-year-old trotter bv Wildwood Jun. from Sirrah J., and looks like one that will improve with age. Rito went off badly, but he settled down in the last mile, although he failed to catch Delville Wood. Dooderall was a poor third. He broke several times, otherwise the son of Quincey may have troubled the winner.. Marvin Chief was fourth and Flamingo fifth some behind the placed horses. The winner paid over a score.

The Progressive Handicap did not arouse much enthusiasm, as the favourite, Lord Rokeby, broke badly when holding a winning .position going down the back stretch. Athos also went badly, anu gave his supporters a poor run for their money. Doreen Dillon won easily at the finish. She is a j five-year-old mare by Harold Dillon from j Lucky Mount, and endowed with a fine turn of speed. Golden Pippin went a good race, and has improved since being under her present trainer's care. She was in charge until two furlongs from homo, easily beating all but the winner. Biddy Tracey was a moderate third. Minelight was slow to begin, but at the finish the Sing Cole gelding put in a solid run and finished up well. Lord Rokeby, 'the favourite, gave an indifferent display, and quito failed to reproduco his private reputation, and at present is not a good one in a race. .Napoleon, Scenery, Citadel, Prince Burand H&mapuka were the eleventh hour withdrawals from the Autumn Handicap, leaving a field of seven. Barooga was made an even money favourite, Ouimet and Lily Dillon being second and third choice respectively. At the end of a mile, the race was practically between Golden Pippin, Ouimet, and Barooga, the latter winning easily at tio finish. Ouimet went well for twelve furlongs, as also did Golden Pippin, but both these began to 6op, and were well beaten at the finish.

The For bury Cup Handicap was a fino ! race, and with a round to go the field was ■ bunched. Then Albert Cling put in his I claim, and taking the lead won full of run(ning from Moneymaker and Trii Pointer, with I Matchlight close up fourth. For a mile ! and a half Rorke's Drift and Huon Patch were at the head of affairs, when the pace ; became solid, and both retired beaten. AlI bert Cling was produoed in fino condition, I and easily outstayed the opposition. _ This j marked his second important win this season, the Oamaru-trnined pacer having wco the Ashburton Cup in December last, defeatin" a strong field. Moneymaker stayed better than Trix Pointer over the last mile, and gained second money. Matchlight made ■up a lot of ground, finishing fourth, cloee behind the placed horses. Sungod began well but failed to catch those that finished in front of him. to all of whom he was giving a etart. Shanghai made no showing in the earlv stages, but over the last portion he was" pacing well. Nihilist did his preliminary when he took ill, and the stewards allowed his withdrawal, and returned the investors their money. Later in the afternoon the* son of Four Chimes bccame worse and died. Nihilist was a consistent performer, and during his short racing career he show-

Ed himself tvlll at home in saddle and in harness, and his loes is a had one.

A small field faced the starter in the Caversham Handicap, which attracted only six starters. At the end of a furloDg Robert R. was in charge, but failed to maintain his effort, finally finishing 1 out of a place. Hoymetta. began well, and making no mistakes, won nicely from Royal Hope, who broke down during the race, but managed to get second money. Golden Age went well for. a mile and a quarter. Child Heiress stood on tho mark, and the favourite, Lord Rokeby, after beginning badly, made a poor showing. »

All started in the Dominion Handicap, of two miles, for unhoppled .trotters, in harness, Succory, Billy Parole, and Commander Bell being the best backed of the field. Succory began smartly, and soon opened up a largo gap between himself and the rest of the field. Over the last furlong he stopped to nothing, and Patard eaaily beat him in the run home. Treasure Seeker showed speed in patches, but failed to trot steadily. With a round to go Billy Parole ran into second place, only to loee his position shortly after, as he broke badly, and failed to get going again. Neither Commander Bell nor The Sprinter was prominent, and ran much below expectations.

A select field of fifteen went to the poet .in the Dash Handicap. It was one of the best trotting races of the day, Sashwood, Geo. M. Dillon, Jane Wilkes, G.uynemer, and High Admiral each coming in for solid support. The race was an interesting one, as with two furlongs to go their field was bunched, and fully six competitors held & winning chance. After a great finish down the straight, High Admiral, a three-year-old son of Wildwood Jr. and Jenny Lind, won handsomely from the much-improved Oamarutrained mare Sashwood, who was closely followed by Geo. M. Dillon, Guynemer, and Fishorton. The honomrs' of the race rested with Sashwood, who had _to concede the winner 48 yards, besides which ho got anything but a good passage. During .tho .race the hard track found Geo. M. Dillon out, as he pulled up very lame. He is a fino pacer, and has only to keep sound to win races. Fisherton went well for two furlongs, and looks like an early winner. Guynemer showed fino form,, and is on the improvo. Tatsy Dillon was prominent in the early stages, but failed to stay on at the business end. Jane Wilkes reared up prior to the start, and damaged her sulky, taking no part in the race.

Matty's Boy was made a warm favourite in the St. KiMa Handicap, with plenty of admirers for . Shanghai, Stockade, and Huon Patch. • Bil] Brown began in great style, but soon left his feet, and was never again prominent. After being well placed over the first four furlongs, Rorke's Drift took charge, and won nicely from Shanghai, with Inwood close up third. The favourite, Matty's Boy, broke soon after'the start, and finished in the ruck. Agnes Chief and Huon Patch ran much ■ below expectations. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TEr.EGKAM.)
