RACING AND TROTTING

NOTES.

(By "Lookee-ON.")

dominations for tho South Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Meeting cloee on Friday. Handicaps for the minor events at the Southland Racing Club's Summer Meeting will appear on Friday. All the Biccarton horses engaged at the Dunedin Summer Meeting left for Wingar tui yesterday. ( Merry Lad, who has recovered from, tho fall he got at Kurow, was turned out at Fort Levy on Saturday. T. H. Gillett will leave for the West Coast on Friday, with Achilledes, Tunic, Boseveor, Bod Fool, Tip Up, and Morton. Stamboul,- who has filled out during his enforced holiday, is again in work at Biccarton. B. Emerson, H. Ellis, R. Ellis, and G Murray Aynsley will not have any horses racing at the holiday meetings. Owing to the poor nominations received for the gallops,- the Cromwell Jockey Club's Meeting, which was to have been held' on the 28th inst., has been postponed until January 25th. There were 16 nominations for each of the two trots, but only three and four in the principal handicap and the six furlongs race. For the Vincent Jockey Club's Meeting on New Year's Day fairly good nominations have been received. The entries for the principal event, the Vincent Jockey Club Handicap, one mile and a, quarter, are:— Glen wood,' Wingform, All Beady, United Service, Lady Edith, Calabria, Laurento, and Benedict. - - 'Mr Gerald Stead experieftced . a stroke of bad luck at the Brackenfield Stud last week, when he loaj, -his best yearling colt, a chestnut by Nassau—Bray ton, by Bardolph—, Zaza, a Bister to that well-known Australian 1 stayer The Victory. This colt showed much. ! more promise than did Surveyor at the B&me •age. Yet another misfortune was the losa ■ , of a sister to Surveyor, this year's foal by ' Nassau—Pedometer. [ . Pedometer, the dam of Surveyor, has been ' sold, by Mr Gerald Stead to a Vioiorion i buyer, and she will be sent across to Australia when space can be secured. Tho withdrawal by tho Federal Government : of restrictions is going to be productive of. a deal of unregistered racing in Queensland a* well as New South Wales (says the Sydney "Beferee"). Ground has been secured in Warwick for a racecourse for an unregistered. club. Some life disqualifications were imposed 1 by the stipendiary stewards at the Canning. Park (West Australia) November Meeting. , G. Every's Lady Mite and H. W. Caporn's Nuncyland were to have started in the Gosnells Handicap, but the stipendiary stewards ordered their withdrawal. .Alter .an adjourned enquiry tho stewards announced that they had disqualified for life G. Every and Lady Mite, H. Caporn and his attendant. A. Fisher, and ivuncyland. They were disqualified under clause 88a of the Bacing Bules, which provides that any person who administers or. causes to. be administered for the purpose of affecting the speed, stamina, or courage of a horse, any drug or stimulant, except by permission of the stewards, and subject to 'such conditions aa they may impose, may be disqualified by the committee or the stewards for any period they may think fit. It is that the-parties intend to appeal. it has been rumoured from time to time (says the WfiSt Australian correspondent of the,. Sydney *Iveferee"), that doping has been freely carried on, both nn the goldfields and metropolitan areas. Some cases are B&id to have been detected on tie goldfields, but it is no easy matter to prove doping. The W.A.i.O. have tried various means to detect offenders. The antics of some horses, both in the saddling paddock and at the barrier cause picion, but unless offenders are caught in the act it is little use taking action. (Br "Searchlight.") The trotting mare Havana, having finished . ber racing career, has been mated with ; Quincey. ■ ■ - . I F. E. Jones, the Washdyke trainer, has | purchased the pacing filly Necessity from j Mr A. Dale. ' Mr F J. Hamilton has sold the five-year-old gelding Justice, by Lord Chancellor from Cocoanut, to Mr L. Watson, of Awa- , huri. i The well-known trotting mare Lady Patricia will in future race in the interest of Messrs W. J. Moir and A. Fleming. As Mr H. Reynolds ia still indisposed, it ia understood that Mr W. Norman will dispatch the fields at Ashburton on Boxing Day.
