Tho Lyttelton waterfront was busier than usual yesterday. Tho following vessels wero in port:—Uajtuud, Ji.cnt, orator, Ko&amond, Kaluka, Ko.vhai, Kamo, \>ooiton, Wanaii, Wakaiu, Orepuki, Monowai, Maun, Cygnet, Duqucsne, Luy, and. vsroiyii i ranees. It is anticipated that an agreement will be reached in connexion with various claims against tho owners of the American schooner i Oakland for dainago to cargo this week, and that the vessel wiJ. be released from "arrest ; and be in readiness for sailing about tho end of the week. .. ... A "Wellington telegram states that the Mar rine Department lias decided not to hold a Magisterial inquiry into the circumstances of the stranding of the steamer Dorset in Wellington harbour. The steamer Wairau, having taken in a quantity of general cargo at Lyttelton" yesterday, was despatched Jast evening for Wellington. The ferry steamers Mararoa and Monowai left Lyttelton last night, with large complements of passengers. ThoCygnot left Lyttelton yesterday on a special trip to Kaikoura, and is expected back in port to-night. The Union Co.'s steamer' Kamo will probably sail from Lyttelton to-day for New Plymouth. Sh© arrived here on Saturday night.

The Eastern trader Orator, under.the com- j mand of Captain D. Flynn, with H. Chalmere, first offioer, W. F. O'Neill, second, and T. EL. Goddard, ■ third, arrived in port yesterday morning from Colombo, via Australian ports. The Orator brought over 400 bags and 20 hampeis of mail matter, for all parte of the Dominion; mostly Australian, and a few, bags from India and Capetown. Shs brought no cargo >for Lyttelton, but will load at this port 4000 bales of wool, 20,000. sacks of grain, and 1000 casks of tallow. • Sho will proceed to Wellington to complete, and from there will' eail for tho United Kingdom, via Panama.

The new F. and S. liner Kent made her first appearance at Lyttelton yesterday, from London, via Auckland and Wellington. She has been equipped with every modern contrivance for the rapid handling of cargo, and ha 3 five telescopic masts. Most' of hsr elaborate camouflage has been covered by a now coat of paint. The vessel is -iß3ft in length, 62ft 9in beam, and has a draught when fully laden of 29ft 2in. Her tota] insulated cargo space is 353,167 cubio feet, and her deadweight carrying capacity is 11,201 tons. The engines have a nominal power of 12 knots on a consumption of 80 tons per day, and tho permanent bunkers have a capacity of 1781 tons of coal, leaving 9420 tons for oargo. She brought 600 tons of general merchandise for discharge here, and will lift cargo at this port, before proceeding to Dunedin to complete her unload: ng. Tho Kent will also load at Bluff and Wellington, and leaves tie latter port about January 18th for London, via Panama.
