JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS. At a meeting of the executive of 'the Peninsula Horse Show Association held at Durauchelle on Saturday, it was resolved to hold the annual sliotr on j December 31st. Under ordinary cir-, cumstances the show ■would have been j held in the middle of November, but j the epidemic decreed otherwise. KALKOURA. Mr -F. N. CULVER DEN. • A has bean- made with the erection of a new school at Culvorden, the need of which has been keenly felt' during the past four or five years. Tho site selected is just over the railway lino opposite the post office, and fronting on to a quieter ro'ad. On Thursday evening Mr It. 0. Brehncr, of the railway staff at Culverden. was tendered a farewell smoke social on the occasion of his transfer to the Christchurch relief staff. Mr F. H. Francc presided, and in presenting -Mr Brebncr with a tobacco pouch and- a sum of money, referred to his many good qualities. 3lr F. .1. L. Scottj on behalf of tho Culverden Tennis Club, presented Mr Brebner with a tobacco pouch, suitably engraved. and expressed regret at losing him from the dub 'Hie annual Sunday school treat was held in the Domain oil Saturday afternoon. The weather was rather dull and windy, but the rain held off, and on the whole was rather better than a very hot day. G. Crampton), "who apologised for tho absence on account of illness of the Rev. J. H. Thompson, of Waiau. Toys were then distributed amougßt the children, who appeared to be well satisfied with their afternoon's entertain mont. ASHBURTON. Four influenza patients were discharged from the Aehburtou county hospital on Saturday. There are only four patients left in the institution. The Ashburton police raided business premises in "West street on Saturday, and it is. understood a quantity of liquor was seized. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr R. Clark, J.P., a statutory first offender, who was found drunk on Sunday morning, was fined 10s aud costs.

Yesterday tras observed as a close holiday in Ashburton, and, the weather being fine, a number of pleasure parties spent the day in the country. There was u large gathering on trie local bowling green, and members, of the Ashburton Bowling Club played a progressive tournament. At a meeting ■ of the committee of the Ashburton A. and P. Association, Mr J. Cow referred to the deaths of Messrs J. M. Cambridge and J. Ruddiek, and it was decided to forward letters of sympathy to the relatives of the deceased. . TEMIJKA. In reply to an enquiry, Mr W. F. Evans, secretary of the Temuka Caledonian Society, has received the following telegram from Dr. Chesson, District Health Officer: "Dancing most dangerous form of amusement at present time owing to risk _of infection from close contact. _ Advise postponement until. everything quite clear." The proposed dance on Boxing Night has accordingly been postponed.
