A letter was read from the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board stating that it had set aside a wing of the Essex Home, Linwood, for the wives of the poorer, classes for maternity purposes. Tho Hastings Borough Council wrote, asking the Council to endorse a resolution adopted by. it, asking the Government to intern all aliens, and debar them from_ working or the wharves and shipping.—Received. The chairman of the Rangiora High School Board apologised for the tone of a letter sent to the Council.—Received. The Works Committee recommended that the price of timber now being cut at Maria Andrew Park be 17s per 100 ft for boards, and lGs 6d for scantlings, and that the price of firewood be 275-6 d per cord. The committee reported that it had no recommendation to make with regard to the application of Messrs Payne and Trustum for an increase of wages. It recommended the purchase of a small iron shed, which was under offer for £10 for storage of tools: also the purchase of a single-furrow plough and 150 yards of broken metal. —The report was adopted. Three tenders were received for the sanitation contract, and it was decided to accept the tender of F. Murray and F.. Dale at lis 3d pez pan per annum. Complaints were reoeived by the Council as to the excessive speed of _ motorists through the streets. It was decided to request the police to' take drastic action. It was decided to the proposed poll on the Fire Board question until the municipal election in April. The Superintendent of the Firo Brisrade was authorised to arrange f°r some better, means of getting the plant to fires.
