PATEENA'S FIREMEN.

MANNING- SCALE ALTERED. Ttit. eecrclary of the Seamen's Union,. MrW. T. Young, has received ft fetter from «h& Marine Department intimating that ' f Jw • Minister has ■ eanctioned . alteration of . tho manning of the Union Company's steamer Pateena to nino firemen and three trimmers. ~ This is &n impiovemen t in the stokehold manning of the vessel' to which the union agrees. Some weeks ago the union approached tho owners on theeubject, and the company agreed to the proposal of an alteration - to nine firemen. _ The Pateena, la considered a "heavy job" in the stokehold, them being two boilers with twelve furnaces. Formerly sho had two firemen.ineach watch,, which meant that each fireman had to handle six furnaces, being two furnaces mceo than ♦■fa* average. This canßed the Pateena to be a "heat y job" for firemen, and ai a result of it firemen worn-always reluctant to join the ship and generally they did not rtay in the vceeel very long. WitJi tho new manning of nine firemen there will bo three firemen in each watch, and thus each fireman will work four furnaces, whioh is tho average number, but these firemen will do a bit of trimming in addition. The alteration com*® into operation immediately. KBPORT OP WATERSIDE ACCIDENTS' COMMISSION. (PttESS ASSOCIATION TELZGTtAM.) WEI/I/pfGTOST, August 23.
