OBITUARY.

MR J. R. JOHNSTON.

JT. R. Johnston, who was killed at >setherwood, Marlborough, & few days ago, through his horse backing over a cliff, was well-known in Christchurch. He was the eldest surviving son of the late Mr James Robert Johnston. of Cheltenham, Feilding, and a -brother of Mr F.TV. Johnston, of this city. _ In the early eighties he was a prominent oarsman, being a member of the Union Rowing Club, Christclmrrh, find the Star Boating Club, "Wellington, and won a number of single sculling races both in New Zealand and West Australia. In 1885 he left New Zealand for' West Australia, and was engaged for some time in station life on the Gascoigne river. Later he joined the staff of the National Bank of Australasia, and was actingmanager of one of the Westralian branches when he resigned and entered into the land business on his own account. He returned to New Zealand m 1912, and shortly afterwards took up some sheep country in Marlborough which ho was farming successfully at the time of his death. He Jeaves a widow and three children. Tho interment was a private one, and took place | at Linwood on Thursday last, in ihe ! presence of a few old Christchurch friends, the Rev. Mr Leach officiating at the graveside.
