ABOUT THE ENEMY

(By Cable.—Preaa Association.—Copyright, (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) AMSTERDAM, May 18.

Maximilian Harden, in "Die Zukunft," says the vital interests of Austria and Germany are divergent. He declares: "Tho Mittel Europe idea is a brillinatly organised folly. Austria wants meat, raw materials, and money to purchase them. Victorious battlefields will not yield money. She aso needs freedom to make agreements with the Powers which are Germany's enemies, and not Austria's. She needs American friendship most of all, and longs for peace with America." •'Vorwaerts" declares that the Aus-tro-German alliance will continue only if based on the people's willing consent. There is little sign of this consent in Austria, where Germany is unpopular, owing to Pan-German propaganda. It is announced from Vipnna that the Emperor Karl will shortly visit Sofia and Constantinople. GENEVA, May 16. It is reported that the German Baltic fleet is concentrated at Kiel.

NEW YORK, May 1C ; Tho "Chicago Daily News" Peking correspondent says that definite arrangements have been made between China and tho Allies whereby Austrians and Germans residing in China will bo deported to Australia. Japan has undertaken to transport them, the transportation commencing in June.
