The Commission of Enquiry into waterside accidents concluded its sittings here to-day. Further evidenoe of workers regarding conditions was given, and then the officials examined the wharfinger-for-the. Union Steam Ship Company. He said his knew of no | case of - victimisation for reporting defective i gear. It was the duty of an officer, on reaching port, to inspect the gear before crfrgo was worked. Other witnesses 'also denied the allegation of victimisation. Inspectors examined Home and coastal boats, and also had the right to inspect the gear on foreign ships. xiarold. Sergeant,- harbourmaster, stated that at'one time the Harbour Board appointed an inspector of • gear, but owing to overlapping with the Marine Department, which appointed surveyors, the Board's inspector was- withdrawn. The inspection on ships and hulks, and on shore should be •under one control.

The Union Company's wharfinger (Captain Ilee) agreed that nets for hatchways and safety nets would minimise accidents. '

Kepresentatives of various companies stated that the gear was frequently examined, and all that was found defective was replaced immediately.

Samuel Dalrymple, Inspector of Machinery under the Department, said that ell gear on hulks and ships was inspected once a year, and-further examinations wero made if defects were reported.

The Commission resumes at "Wellington on Wednesday nest.

If the association, she wrote, would provide her with another she would let them have the first set back' at half-nrice. (Laughter^
