Mr C. H. Poole, M.P. for Auckland West, leaves New Zealand shortly for England on Y.M.C.A. work.

I One of the crew of the New Zealand hospital ship that arrived from Home this week is the Now Zoaland jockey, R. Donovan, who was on the Wairuna when she was captured a day or two out from New Zealand by the Wolf. Donovan was the chiof cook on tho Wairuna, and after being aboard tho Wolf for some months was transferred to the Spanish steamer Igotz Mendi, another of tho raider's victims. Tho Igotz Mendi was wrecked, and Donovan was one of the survivors who wero cast ashoro in Denmark, whence they subsequently travelled to England.

Advice has been received in Christchurch that Major H. J. Daltry, D.5.0., N.Z.F.A., who left with the 2nd Reinforcements and Berved on Gallipoli and in France, has been appointed Live Stock Commissioner for Yorkshire. Major Daltry, who loft New Zealand as a lieutenant, was m charge of the first howitzer battery that landed on Gallipoli. Ho was mentioned in Sir Charles Munro's despatches from Gallipoli, and was also mentioned m despatches from France. Major Daltry is a son of Mr and Mrs G. Daltry, of Merivale. Before leaving New Zealand he was with tho Canterbury Frozen ■ Meat Company, and his experience of tho trade would fit him for his present appointment, which is understood to have an important bearing on food control- *
