Joseph Caiilaux, several times Ministor ot I' inance in French Cabinets, and Prime_ Minister (ltjil-ii)l2), resigned ottico in 1914, when his wiie shot iVL. Calmette, editor of the "Figaro," in revenge for publisning letters which had passed between nor and her husband M. Caiilaux maintained friendly relations with lJolo, Almereyda, and other adventurers during the war, and is alleged to have plotted to destroy the Anglo-French Alliance during his visits to Italy and South America. He is at present awaiting trial on a charge of having "endangered the- security of the State."- The charge was preferred by tho Military Governor of Paris. M. Duval was the first porson arrested in connexion with the French scandals. Pie was the manager of the infamous "Bonnet Rouge" newspapers, which insidiously attacked 'France's allies, and openly defended German spies and other criminals. He had frequent meetings with enemy agents I m Switzerland, and was eventually caught with a cheque for £6000 in his possession. Later, owing to the blundering of the officials, the cheque was returned to Duval and cashed. Bv chance M. Ribot (then Premier of l'.rance) lieard of this extraordinary incident, and caused inquiries to be set on foot, which led to the arrest of M. Duval. The prosecution alleges that m all M. Duval drew £20,000 from Switzerland, of which his collcajrue, Almereyda, admitted receiving £6000 but he doclarcd that its source was untainted.
