THE RECRUITING PROBLEM,

The improvement in recruiting continues, largely as a result of allowing the enlistment' of youths from 18 to 21 years, without their parents' consent. Many parents are complaining about the clraming of restless boyhood, while still allowing largo numbers of older and fitter men to shirk their responsibilities.
CONFERENCE OF CO-OPERATIVE COMPANIES.
MELBOURNE, May 15. An inter-Stato Conference of cooperative companies has opened, with the object of establishing a federal eo® operative scheme for the purchase and distribution of all the requirements of the primary producers. The conference adopted a resolution, seoonded by Mr E. W. Relph, of tho New Zealand Farmers' Co-op., Canterbury in favour of the formation of a Federal wholesale company to purchase and distribute all requirements for primary producers.
