The Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister <f Internal Affairs, returned to Christchurch from South Canterbury by yesterday's express. He will leave for Wellington this evening. At 3 p.m. today ho will address the members of. the Women's National Reserve on tho Auckland resolutions regarding conscription of women.

Anticipating his arrival in Sheffield, one of tho local papers describes him as "statesman, sportsman, and soldier, and an expert on trade matters. This visitor comes from one of the most interesting and patriotic of the Dominions of the British Empire."

Tho Hon. Sir William Fraser, Minister of Public Works, arrived from Wellington by yesterday's ferry steamer. The Minister paid a visit, per motor, to Oxford, and was accompanied bj- tho Hon. D. Buddo, M.P., Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., and Mr J. MeEnnis, Resident Engineer, Public Works Department. Sir William returned to town last- evening, and leaves to-day for Rangitata, returning to-morrow to Christchurch.

At last night's meeting of the Firo Board, on the motion of Mr H. P. Hopkins, seconded by Mr G. Kerruish, it was decided to forward to Mr J. F. Grierson a letter expressing tlic Board's appreciation Of his services during his long term as a member of tho Board. Mr Kerruish said that though members had not always agreed witli Mr Grierson, they had always recognised that ho had been actuated by one object, the welfare of the Board.

Mr James Buchan, who was elected to tho Christchurch Fire Board in place of Mr J. F. Griorson, was formally and. heartily welcomed as a member at last; night's meeting of the Board by Mr. H. Holland, the chairman. Mr Buchan, iu acknowledging the welcome, said that ho had some previous experience of work on a Fire Board, and hoped he would find it as pleasant on tho Christchurch Board. Anything he could do to further tho interests of the Board and of the public he would be oniy too glad to do it.
