SPORTING.

RACING AND TROTTING

NOTES.

(BY "Looker-ON.">

The plough, was open on Saturday for work. but ns it was on tho heavy side, trainers used it for slow "wotU, but P re ~ ferred tho sand or tan tracks for any of their horses that were going fast.

Daytime, General Petain, and Bon Spec t were all sprinted over short courses, but they were not out to make time.

Majetetikoff, who won the Ashburton Cup last Thursday, is very stiff and soro now from the fall she got on the afternoon prior to the races. She can hardly move her neck.

Charle.v was out doing trotting exercise on Saturday. He is sore behind, one of his hind fetlocks having filled.

Bore was schooled over the brush double twice on Saturday, and on the (second occasion he went on and jumped the sod wall. The Calibre gelding is a fearless jumper, but he does not know much about brush fences yet, and instead of skimming through the top of them he flies the lot, which is much too big an effort at every fence when he has to cover a long course and keep jumping. To-morrow morning, in company with Paremata, he is to be given a final school before leaving for AVanganui. Jones will also take Charley north. Ellis will ride Bore and Bagby will have the mount on Charley.

Hagerty went to Lyttelton and met Kirkby on Saturday. The big steeplechaser looks well, as if he has done a fair amount of "work, and he should) strip well at Wingatui next month.

Biplane was suffering with his kidneys last Friday, but was all right again on Saturday.

Bondage, who has julst started work, is inclined to be somewhat feathery-' lieaded. and frets when on tTie course. She is to get a month of trotting exercise to see if she will settle down.

Hibberd is just breaking in a fair stamp of filly by • Masterpiece^ —St. Fanna. The youngster is a credit to her sire, and, liko him, has a splendid set of legs. St. Fanna is by St. Ambrose—Fanna, by Maxim—Hermione, by Cadogan—Helena, by Traducer — Strenna, a, pedigree to admire. ,

Kilboy's damaged front leg has calloused, and there is a possibility that it may stand a mild preparation, but he has sprung a very ugly curb now that is causing him some trouble.

The Cooltrim youngster that died on arrival at "Wellington did not belong to Mr Luttrell, but to the well-known Riccarton trainer M. Hobbs.

Art is to be tried.over the steeplechase fences one day towards the endi of tho week. When tried last year, tho Sarto—Mist gelding showed a very decided objection to tackling big fences, but I believe he has done some li.ttla schooling at his owner's station feinco then.

The owner of Donnata decided at Ashburton that he would retiro the Menschikoff—Madonna mare from the race track, and put her to the stud next season. It might pay to operate on such an exceptionally brilliant mare, to see if her throat troubles could be cured.

. Accommodation was booked at Ellershe for Sleight of Hand and Nita. Evidently the programme, so far as the first-named is concerned, has been altered, as he has been withdrawn from Ellerslie engagements.

"W. Sf. Young, who was disqualified for two years by the Manawatu Club in connexion with the Ibex case, has lodged an appeal, which will be heard by the Wanganui District Committee at a special meeting to-morrow.

J.. Olsen has been engaged, to ride Achilledes in the Marlborough Cup tomorrow.

Coalition, in charge of H. McSweeuey, will leave Trentham for "Wanganui to-morrow, and he will also compete at Ellerslio before returning home. He may be accompanied by Seadown, who is nominated in flat events at Ellerslie, "but nothing definite has yet been decided: as to the latter horse.

Johnny "Walker has been blistered, and ho will probably be allowed to run out for another six months.

Owing to T ecent rain the track wae in a bad state, making the times very slow, with tho exception of tho mile saddle race, as by tho time that event was run the track had considerably improved. The racing waa interesting, and speculation brisk. Southland horse 3 were in good form, winning four out of the eight races on tho programme. Tho Waimate-owned and trained Beeswing was sent out favourite in the Amateur Handicap. She looked a winner at a mile, but failed to stay on, finishing a moderato third. Koraki was always in a handy position, and won easily from Rankin. Parkfield and Waihemo showed to most advantage of tho Royal Hopo and Anna, two well-backed candidates in the Innovation Handicap, never once flattered their supporters. Rothcliff, after going twenty yards, stumbled and. fell. Bryce making a good recovery, otherwise a, bad accident might have happened, but more than one of tho competitors suffered interference in consequence of tho mishap. The winner, Dora. Derby, outstayed th.e Heathcote-traincd Onimet, who at one stag® looked all over a winner. Dora Derby won with something in hand. Jane Wi.kes and. Sashwood showed fairly good form, tho res* beine outclassed. . The Beach Handicap was practically a duc-1 between Silver Shoe and Nihilist. Beewood led for four furlongs, and breaking, gave way to Nihilist and Silver Shoe. This pair racd neck and neck until a furlong from home where Silver Shoe drew away, and, staying tho better of the two, won comfortably George M. Junr. was the only other that looked like being in the money, when he broke down four furlongs from home. Nancy Stair, favourite in the Winter Oats Handicap, got anything but a good passage, suffering interference more than once, and she did well to get third. Dnnspey had his win made all the more easy, aa three fur-

Keta pear on Thursday. Peter made no showing, being unable, to handlo the heavy track. After the race tho Judicial Committee met and decided to award third money to Patard, and distance Boyal Rothschild for tho raco for galloping. They also suspended D. O. Jones, the driver of Boyal Bothschild, far, tho rest of the season. Pitaroa scored a' popular win in the Jeffs Memorial Handicap, which wao ono of. tho boat races of tho day. Pxingle in tho saddle, was backed down to a veTy ehort price in the Flying Handicap, but was never dangerous at any part of the . journey. The start was a bad-one,' amongst those that did not leave well being Quadroon, Radiant Morn, Masterpiece, Bill Brown, and HcConnaohie. Gladeye and Homeland led for six furlongs, when Strategy ran to the front, and won easily from Molly McKinney. This was the beet betting race of the day, ind both liorees paid good prices.
