CANTERBURY PATRIOTIC FUND.

ANNUAL REPORT.

The report to be submitted to the annual meeting of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund, to be held next week, reviews the activities of the fund during the past three years and a half..

Referring to grants to returned soldiers commencing in business, the report states:—

"The task of assisting returned men who have sufficiently recovered from their disabilities to re-establish themselves in eivil life, has been a big one, but it is pleasing to note that, the elforts of tho committees specially empowered to make recommendations in regard to the applications received were able to render material assistance. No less than eighty-two applications were dealt with by the Agricultural and Fanning and the Trades and Professions Committees, and were disposed of in the following manner:— AgTi- Trader and cultural Professions Co.uDiiii.ee. (1) Grants authorised .. iirt H (3; Applications declined 23 4 (2) Applications hold over -It" :i G1 18 The executive baviug suspended the powers of tbe Agricultural and Farming and Trades and Professions Committees for over three months, whilst awaiting the Adequacy Committee's report, it will be admitted the committees reforred to have been very actively engaged during the remainder c-f the year."

The income and expenditure account shows that the total relief paid to soldiers and their dependants during the year ended March 31st last was £22,276: and since the inception of the fund £39,377. The income from subscriptions during tho past year was £1233, and the total income from that source since the inception of tho fund £179,079; income from interest last year totalled £7349, and since the inception of the fund £14,946. The balance transferred on March 31st to the accumulated fund was £14,808; and the total income from all sources since the inception of the fund was £198,449. The balance-sheet as on March 31st last showed that tho assets (investments, debentures, deposits at call, and cash in bank) totalled £143,674; guarantees, accrued interest, and furniture and collection boxes (after providing for depreciation) bringing the total up to £149,862.
