Bonny Helen and two other mares have returned to Now Zealand m charge of J. Hay. A rough trip was experienced, and Armistice broke her shoulder, and was buried at sea. (Br "Searchlight.") The pacing gelding Our Chum, who raced unsuccessfully at the recent New Brighton Meeting, is now an inmato of E. Berry's stable at Addington.

After being spelled for several months, Merivale has been taken in hand again by T. Frost. Along with Lady Toddington the Galindo mare worked at New Brighton yesterday, and both moved in a pleasing manner.

Tho Brooklyn Lodge team are doing long steady jogging during M. Edwards's absence, _ at Forbury Park, amongst tham being Vice-Admiral, Leo Bell, Adelaide Direct, Manresa, Auckland Girl, Sweot Memory, and Antonio. The champion pacing mare Adelaide Direct has sufficiently recovered from her recent indisposition to join tho active brigade at Brooklyn Lodge. Mr A. R. Farrell has placed his mare, Cora Dillon, in J. McDermott a hands, to be prepared for future engagements. The New Brighton trainer, J. Messer.vy, is a regular attendant on the local track with Jessie Dillon,. Lord Dillon, Miss Havoc, and a maiden pacer by Rothschild. The first-men-tioned trio will probably be raced at Canterbury Park next month. Harold Direct has been returned to his owner, Mr P. Delargey, of Dunsandel. by J. McDermott, as the son ot Harold Rothschild has proved untrainable. Before being asked to race again he i$ to be fired and given a lengthy spell. The brpod mare Blue Rose, purchased by Mr C. E. Cross at Mr L. N. Hadfiold's disposal sale in February, died in the early part of this week. Blue Rose was by Rothschild, from Wild Rose by Boston, an Australiian bred mare, brought to New Zealand on account of Mr J. Preece. She had a mile record of 2min 21 l-sth sec, .and: amongst her progeny are Bluewood, Moondrift, and a two-year-old colt to Huon Drift. Blue Rose was stinted this season to Harold Dillon. She slipped her foal, which was the cause ot tho mare's death. ASHBURTON COUNTY R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. , ' The day wae perfect for racing, and tho track was in splendid order. NOTES ON THE RACING. (Br "Lookee-On*.")

Hogerty, on Naupata, mad© tho pace a cracker in the Autumn Hurdles, imd never letting anything head him off, mix home a comfortable winner. The time looks to be much too fast fot such a class of field to PU Golden Prince fenccd well for a beginner, and tried to pace it with Naupata, but he lost a littlo at each obstacle, and was beaten three furlongs from homo Jeannot ran a fair race, but had no chance of beating the winner. Vascular and Banian raced badly, and were \ beaten a long way from home. Kimbolton looked to bo an easy winner a furlong from' home in the l»ongbeaoii Handicap, hut his rider let Matty up onthefence* with the result that he was caught napping, and only scrambled home by a headJohn Reilly, Spyglass, and Vociferate did not begin well, and never had a chance of getting up to the leaders. , Adjutant, who was a good favourite for the Ashburton Cup, did not have the best of luck in running. He was always in a bad. position on. the onteid© of and then four furlonpw from home was taken irp on the outside of Majestikoff and Kilboyno, and just failed'by a-head to boat Majestikoff, after a great race over tho last four furlongs. This pair had the race to themselves as Marsa was a bad third, and Spangle a long way back fourth, with Kilboyno beaten oil. Majestikoff, who won the Cup, paid a great price, but she would not have done so had she not met with an accident while working on tho Ashburton course on Wednesday. While doing three-quarter pace work with Charley a boy and girl rode round the track on their hacks, and, getting in front of the two gallopers,. the whole four received very ugly falls; Fortunately all the riders and horees came out of the melee with only a j few eoratchcs. , ~, ... _ . Gay Lad behaved much. better at the post ihnr, ho did at Timaru. Beginning smartly, he was always in a winning position, and once in the straight he drew away to win nicely by a length and a half, although he did finish in a somewhat green manner. John Reilly was the -unlucky horse in the race, as ho whipped half-way round when the barrier went up, and got away a bad last. Even then he finished fourth. Art's showing was decidedly poor, .and he will have to improve considerably if he is to win any of the good jumping races this winter. The Melrose Trot was/reduced to a match between Bidens and Cole Nut. Bidens began smartly, while the favourite dwelt and lost about two seconds. Then when the favourite was running up the back Doreen Dillon broke in front of him, and nearly ran him off the track, while Bidens was out in front and on the rails. Cole Nut was being driven two furlongs from home, and it was no diflgrace to be beaten a neck. _ . ' Fleetham, who was a hot favourite in the Winchmore Welter, showed up prominently three furlongs from home, but his condition failed, and lie died right out. finishing Inst. Though Charley was the first out of the barrier in the Grove Farm Handicap, Mortify. who was on the move when the tapes were released, immediately rushed to the front, and put up a big gap that was never brioged. Furling swerved into several horses at the start and spoiled their chances. Matty got much tho worst t>i it.
