A very successful concert was held in the Ashley school by a party from the Christchurch Caledonian Society, consisting of Misses Harris, Turner (2), and Wren, and Messrs R. Malcolm, Lindsay, Taylor, Hollis, C'olin Campbell, anil Bracey Wilson. All the items were very well received. During the interval a quantity of produce was sold, Mr It. About eleven o'clock on Tuesday night an unoccupied four-roomed house r.ear the West Belt, owned by Mrs Slueter, Itangiora, was burned down. Harris was introduced by the chairman (Mr Mulcock), and suitably responded. BROOKSIDE. At the annual meeting of the Brookside Patriotic Committee Mr J. Cunningham presided. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr A. K. Hight- was carried, and mention was made of the services as secretary and treasurer rendered to the committee by the late Mr Hight. The report and balance-sheet showed n credit of £4 13s Cd. Both were adopted. The old committee was re-elect-ed, with Mr J. Cunningham as chairman, and Mr W. B. Cunningham as secretary and treasurer. Galbraith, acting-Coroner, held an inquest at Seafield road, Ashburton, yesterday concerning the death of Lawrence J. Sim, the 18-months-old son of James Sim, who was found drowned in n water-race the previous day. A verdict of death by accidental drowning was returned. At the monthly meeting of the Asltburton District W.C.T.U.. Mrs W. T. Corbett presided. An instructive time was spent in the recital of "Favourite Quotations." It was decided to invite Mrs Napier to re-visit Ashburtori at an early date. The discreditable method of celebrating "Anzac Day" in several places where the liquor bars were open was referred to, and the request made that steps be taken to honour that day in future more in accordance with the solemnity of the occasion. Mrs Lill referred to the splendid gift made by Mr F. Ferriman to the New Zealand White Ribbon Hutment Fund, and it was decided to place on record their high admiration of the patriotip ; spirit manifested by Mr Ferriman in tlio generous gifts made by him to the various war funds from time to time. The treasurer reported that £105 had been handed into the fund. The Social Hygiene Society, Christchurch, wrote drawing attention to the necessity for- education in sex problems, and stating that a nurse had been secured to give a series cf lectures to women and girls, with a view to inculcating high morals and spiritual ideals as the only safeguard of youth. The local superintendent of the social hygiene department reported that steps had been taken' to procure the services of a nurse from St. Helen's Home for Ashburton. One new member was elected. Mrs G. Frost was appointed to act as judge at the Band of Hope competitions at Rakaia. WAIMATE. Mr William Inkster, late of tho grain department, Canterbury Farmers' Coop. Association, Waimate, has been appointed grain salesman to Messrs J. Meehan and Sons, Timaru. The Morven settlers, through Mr J. K. Blair, presonted Mr C. Marshall, the stationmaster, with a gold-mounted illuminated wristlet watch and moneybelt, filled with sovereigns, od the occasion of his departure for the training camp.
