OBITUARY.
MR JOHN O'HALLORAN
Mr John O'Halloran, of Glentui, well known throughout North Canterbury, passed away after a short illness vesterday afternoon. The late Mr O'Halloran was a pioneer of the best type. Immediately after arriving in New Zealand, about 1860, he entered the employmont of Messrs Mannering and Cunningham, who had sheep stations at Loburn and Fernside. L&ter on lie was many years a successful manager of til© Glentui estate. Some 20 years ago, when this estate was subdivided lio purchased the homestead block and other parts, and has been a very suecessful farmer. In public life his greatest achievement was inaugurating the splendid system of water-races under the control of the Waimakarirf-Ashley \Y atcr Board. As first chairman of this body' he did yeoman service for the district. The Oxford A. and P. Association owes much to his energy and sagacity- Ho was also chairman of the old Ashley Road Board, president of the Farmers' Union, etc. Probably no man 111 .North Canterbury hap interviewed more Cabinet Ministers on matters of Pi i!* i particularly regarding 'thirds." Some of his exploits as a pioneer are historic, especially the taking of the first mob of sheep to the Coast m tho days of the gold rush. He was; aczompaniod by Mr C. Mr O'Halloran was always a loyal and devout Roman Catholic, and it wafs largely through his efforts that the church at North Loburn was erected.
