CANTERBURY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The general committee of the Canterbury A. and. P. Association met yesterday, Mr R. W. Lochhead presiding.

A motion of condolence was passed to Messrs J. Boag, H. E. Peryman, and K. Mcintosh, who had recently had relations killed in -action.

Messrs H. J. Andrew and G. Higjifc were elected members of the Association.

Mr W. T. Robinson wrote stating that he could not see his way to reconsider his resignation as the Association's representative on the Board of the Technical College and tho Lucerne Committee.

Mr T. ]). lioag was elected the As sociatioii's representative on the Tech nical Board.

The Director of the Technical College again wrote asking for a grant for the College.

It was decided to grant £20 towards the funds of the College.

The chairman said the Finance Committee had decided to ask each member to obtain at least 10 now members for the Association. It was highly important that the membership campaign should be carried 011 with energy at the present time. He noticed that the membership of the Mairawatu A. and P. Association was 1(500, and that of the Canterbury A. and P. Association- was barely 1000. Ho f;>lt sure that with the exercise of a little energy at least 500 additional members could be obtained. The campaign would continue until August 31st.

Mr J. Deans strongly supported- the chairman's request. The finances of the Association were going down and the expenses going up, and it was highly necessary that a move in the direction indicated should be made without delav.

The Ground* Committee recommended that certain -trees on the south-west side of the Show Ground should he cut out, as they were an eyesore at present

This was agreed to. Dr. Levingc drew the committee's attention to the appeal now being made for the benefit of the men of the mercantile marine. The Empire was exnected to raise £250.000. and Canterbury's share was about £10,000. He thought that the cause was a particularly deserving one, and should be supported by-everyone in the Dominion, especially the farmers. New Zealand had done well in the past, but she must go on doing well. We would either have to go on or go under. Mr Geo. Gould said he heartily supported Dr. Levingo's appeal, which he felt was one which should appeal particularly to farmers. He thought that possibly the members present? were, like himself, thoroughly fed tip with new appeals for subscriptions, but this was a fund which ho felt was one worthy of the support of ev<>r\; farmer Without the mercantile marine they in New Zealand would not be in the prosperous condition they were to-dav. Those present tacitly 'agreed to' support the appeal in their several districts.
