MAGISTERIAL.

(Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS.

A first offender was fined os, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness. Arthur Byron, for drunkenness and breach of his prohibition order, was fined £1, as also was William Patrick Noonari. Phillipa Jeffries was fined 10s for breach of her prohibition order. INSULTING LANGUAGE. Frank Pearce (Mr Goodman), a man of 60 years, was charged with using insulting words on a tram-ear. [Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay 21s costs. HOTEL CASES. Bobert John Paul (Mr Johnston) was charged with having permitted drunkenness on the premises of the Oxford Hotel, of which he is licensee. The case was adjourned in order that the Magistrate might inspect the premises, it being alleged for the defendant that the drunken man complained of had been found b.y the police in a sitting-room, and that the defendant had no knowledge of his being on the premises.

John George Partridge and Albert James Partridge were each charged with "treating" in the Zetland Arms Hotel. Nelly Criliey, barmaid at the hotel, and John Gibson "Wood, the licensee, wero charged with having permitted treating (two charges), and with having supplied liquor to two youths (the first-named defendants), who were under the age of 21 years. Mr Malley appeared for "Wood ana Criliey. Sergeant O'Grady said that lie had found the two Partridges in the Zetland Hotel and had askod them for their enrolment cards. They, replied that thev wero too young to have them, and witness said that if that were so they were too young to be drinking in a hotel. Thoy admitted having had "shandy gaffs."

Mr Malley said that if tiic police would agree to withdraw one of tin: charges against the barmaid and licensee, of permitting treating, i.e would plead guilty to the other charges. The police agreed to this course being taken. Mr Malley said that' the barmaid had worked" in that capacity for a period of twelve years, and during that time she had borne an excellent character. "With regard to the lic«ns»>». he was not present at the time the offence was committed.

Sub-Inspector Mullauy stated that the licensee had never been before the Court for any offence. He would also ask for leniency for the barmaid, who had been perfectly frank about the matter.

The two Partridges were each fined £3 and costs The defendant Criliey tv as fined £10 and costs for permitting "treating," - and 20s and costs on eacn of the charges of having supplied liquor to persons under age. The "treating"' charge against the licensee was withdrawn, arid on each of the other two charges he was fined £2 and costs.
