AVONSIDE BURGESSES. meeting of the Avonsido Burgesses' Association last night; presided over fay Mr: W. J. Jenkin, Mr 10. E. Stark, fhe City "Electrical Engineer, gavo>an interesting address on electricity, on the lines of his address to the Workers' Educational Association last week. The large audienco present listened with appreciation to Mr Stark's remarks, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to him after ho had answered several questions. WOOLSTON RED CROSS. The first- monthly social of the season of the lAoolston Bed Cross' Society was held in the Oddfellows' Ha.ll on Saturday evening. Vocal solos wcro contributed by Mrs Gallop and Mr Vogel, recitations by Miss Turner, double clog dance by Messrs Reeve and Walker, and Irish jig bv Mr J, Reeve. During the evening Mr J. Richardson, on behalf of tho committee, presented Mr C. White with a palm bowl and bread fork, in Tecog--1 nition of musical services, rendered to the Branch, COURT STAR OF CANTERBURY. A meeting of the. Court Star of Canterbury of the Ancieut Order of Foresters wits held on Monday, Bro. W. Crawford, CJt.. presiding over a good attcnddance. The delegates to the District meeting held at Belfast gave a full report, of the business transacted at that meeting. The dolegates were thanked for their roports. One of tho Court medical officers. Dr. Thomas, wrote, stating that he had been willed up for service on a military board, and the minute secretary, Bro. A. E. Lane, P.C.R., stated that he . had that day . passed, as fit for eervice,. and hoped to get away to the front-. One new member was proposed. The soldiers' toast, led by tho C.R., concluded the meeting. WORKERS'"EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION. On Monday. evening a meeting was held in Uie Redcliffa Schoolroom to discuss the advisability of. forming a class in connexion with the Workers'. Educational. Association. Mr B. Riley, presided over a good attendance. The Rev. L. G. Whitehead, general secretary of tho association, in tho course of an interesting address, explained the aims and objects of tho movement. Mr S. Bettley suggested that aes Rodclifla was the centre of the district between Sumner and tho lower portion of Woolston, a class should bo formed at Redcliffs to embrace that artea. He moved to that effect. After discussion the motion was carried, and a deputation was appointed to. wait on tho Woolston and Sumner Borough Councils to ask for their support towards the movement. Mi- S. Bettley was appointed secretary of the branch, and Mr W. D. Kirkpatrick tutor. It was resolved that a class 'in history should be commenced next week, and a syllabus- was drawn up. dealing with' English history in tho nineteenth century.
