THE FOOD SHORTAGE. (By Cable. —Preps Association.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cnbk Association.) (Reuter's Telegrams.) (Received May sth, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 4. The . Press Bureau states that large arrivals of American bacon and ham enable the Food Controller temporarily to raise the coupon values, bacon to eight ounces and ham to 12 ounces. The Food Controller hopes that it will be possible to increase the butter and margerine rations before he lowers the bacon ration. The Food Controller estimates thai the acreage under potatoes in tne United Kingdom in 1918 will approximate 900,000 acres, which is 25 per cent, greater than in 1917. CHEVRONS FOR NAVAL SERVICE. (Received May sth, 5.G p.m.) LONDON. May 1. The Admiralty announces that a distinctive Chevron will be issued to all descriptions of the naval personnel, including women, who began sea service in 1914, with an additional Chevron for each year of subsequent service, similar to the Chevrons for military service. Dominion naval ratings will bo eligible for the award in-respect of service outside their own country. BANK OF ENGLAND APPOINTMENT. (Australian and N.Z, Cable Association.) (Received May sth, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 4. The appointment of Sir J. Gordon Nairne to the newly-created post of Comptroller of the Bank of England marks a striking departure from "traditional policy. Hitherto no position equivalent to that of general manager existed. BRITISH MISSION TO BRAZIL. (Australian and N.Z. 'Cable Association.) RIO DE JANEIRO, May 3. A British mission is expected to arrive hero shortly. It is hea'ded by Sir Maurice de Bunsen. Sir Mauricc de Bunsen has had an extensive diplomatic career, which began in 187/. He has held office in tfokio, Siam, Constantinople, Paris, Lisbon, and Madrid; and in 1913-14, up till the outbreak of the war, was British Ambassador in Vienna.
