Killjoy, with a light weight up, and the assistance of blogan over the last half mile, was doing her best at the end of threo-quarters of a miie. run in lmin 17sec. This was a really smart gallop.

Silver and Black galloped sis furlongs in lmin 21sec, and Gamecock witu a light-weight up, and ridden out, sprinted tour furlongs in 49 3-oth sec.

General Petain was a long way behind ivaupata at the business end of a ten furioiig gallop. jNaupata's time was 2min 19 iJ-otix sec. and he finished well.'

Spangle pleased oy tho manner in which 6iie ran a mile in lmin 44 4-sth sec. Tho last six furlongs took lmin 19 1-oth sec. This was the be6t milo of tho morning.

Majestikoff was going as well as Charley at the end of six furlongs, run in Imm 17 2-stii sec, which was a smart performance.

Paremata (Ellis) and St. Clctus (MciMullan) were companions in a schooling gallop over, four flights of hurdles. Paremata jumped perfectly, but St. Cletus's showing was very ragged, and would not lead anyone to think he could win the hurdle race at Ashburton.

Battle Eve has been soro for several days, and has not done anything more than trotting exercise, which makes him look like a non-starter in tho Ashburton Cup.

NEW ZEALAND DERBY STAKES. The Now Brighton Trotting Club was favoured with beautiful weather on Saturday, for its Autumn Meeting, though towards thn closc of the afternoon tho keen east wind made itself felt. Tho attendance was very good, and the speculation brisk, the investments amounting to £21,900, as compared with £22,178 10s on the second d:iy, and £15,387 on tie first day last year, when the Mooting extended over two days. As tho result of tho heavy rain earlier in the week tho track was a trifle slow, but otherwise in good order. The chief attraction of tho afternoon's card was tho fifth contest for the I New Zealand Derby Stakes, and although | this eveht brought out only four starters, it aroused more than usual interest, in view of the circumstances surrounding the running of tho Champion Stakes, in which the four competitors met at Addingion at tho Easter Meeting. The result demonstrated Albert ding's superiority over the rest of tho field, though Cole Nut, who helped to set a solid pace throughout, 6tuck to liis work gamely. Tho surpriso of the race was the failuaa of the favourite, Queen Chimes, for, after showing a fine turn of spoed in the early stages of the race, she vraa unable to pice it with Albert Cling and Cole Nut over the last half mile, and was eventually beaten., ou;. oi a place by Gallantry. Albert Cling's victory was greeted with the heartiest applause, which was renewed when the winner was de- j carated with the blue ribbon by Miss Denton, | daughter of the president of the club. After the race the stipendiary steward, Mr T. H. Davey, lodged a complaint against J. Bryce, driver of Queen ChinKs, for in}-"n'ering with Cble Nut in the early part of tho race, and the Judicial Committee, after an enquiry, suspended Bryce for the rest of the day, and he was not allowed to 6tart any of his horses in the • subsequent events: Apart from the Derby the racing was full of interest, the finish of the Brighton Handicap being particularly exciting, and the Meeting brought the club's racing for the season to a very successful conolusion. Details cf the racing | are:— I
