KOWAI. ' • The list meeting of the Kowai County Council was attended by Messrs G. A. McLean (chairman), TV. H. Tale, T. Retaliick. J. Bowc, J. D, Wyllie. and T. Hanna. It was reported that letters of condolence had been sent to Mr and Mrs P. Lang, Saltwater Creek, on their eon being killed in aotion, and to Mrs Allan, (Sefton), on her Bon being killed in action. The clerk was instructed to convey "i he Council's sympathy to Mrs Harrison, of Eskvale, Broomfield, whose son was recently kiljpd in action. The Minister of Internal Aft airs forwarded a oopy of the "New Zealand Gazette" of December 20th, containing a proclamation under the Counties Amendment Act, 1913, altering the boundaries of the counties of' Rangiora. Oxford,- Kowai, and Ashley as from January Ist, 1918. The effect of this alteration is to make the boundary between these couunties the middle of the Ashley River, instead of the right bank, as at present. Mr G. L. Donaldson -wrote, stating that a committee had J>een formed for the purpose of raising £10,000 from North Canterbury for the Salvation Army war work, and asked the Council's co-operation. It was decided to reply that while the Council wae in sympathy with the purpose, it could not undertake anything- in tie matter at present. Dr. Chesson, District Health Officer, wrote, calling attention to the drainage from a dwelling at Ashley being discharged into the street side channel. It was decided to prohibit any further drainage entering the channel. Complaints were received of the large number of stray stock on the Sefton swamp Toads by day and night. It wad decided to ask the police to take action. The tender of F. G. Reid (Petone) was accepted for tho supply of dog collars for the year 1918. It was resolved that the dog registration fee for 1918 for sheep and cattle dogs of collie breed should be 2s Ed, any other breed 10s, if paid before July Ist, 1913; after that date an additional fee of sixpence on each dog will be charged. Mention was made of the dangerous state of the BeTrydale crossing of tho Nortli Kowai River at Broomfield. It "was decided to write to Mr G. W. Forbes, 34.P., "asking him to bring under the notice of the Minister of Publio Works the great jieed to have the bridge erected at the crossing (for which a tender -was accepted) before the -winter seta in. The aurveyor's report on work done during the month-was adopted. On the surveyor's recommendation, it was decided to extend the culvert on Fisher's Toad, Sefton, and to level the North road, corner near Leithfield.
