SPORTING.

RACING AND> TROTTING NOTT'S. (Bv *Lookeii-On.") Owing to the incessant rain, work was at a standstill- at Riccarton yesterday. Some trainers exercised on the roads, but most cf ihem loft tlioir charges in their hexes. The following horses arrived by tho ferry boat from the north yesterday: Desert Gold, Estland, Finmark, Egypt, Lingerie, Parana, Nystad, Birkenvale, Sunny Climes, Cherry Mart, Johnny Walker, Mcnelaus, Courtliekl, and Seadown.

A. J. McFlinn got.a bit of a surprise at Makaraka (Gisborne) racecourse oil Monday. He started Muliivo off at tho iive-furlong peg, and after going a little way the gelding swerved in. and jumped one of tho hurdles that are up to keep horses on tho outside of the course. Although never jumped before, McFlinn states tho gelding made no mistake ' !1 clearing tho obstacle.

A sensational incident, in 'winch some remarkably clever horsemanship- and presence of mind was displayed, was witnessed at tho Waverley racecourse on Monday (says tho "Wanganui Herald"). The h-orses had just passed the post when Madam llistori's saddle slipped as R. Hatch (the rider) straightened himself up to pull up his mount, which bad won by a narrow margin from Humorist, on whom Claude Browne had the mount. Hatch rolled, and the mare stumbled, with the result that her rider was thrown out of the saddle and would have fallen right in front of several horses which were coming on at top speed just behind. Quick as a flash, Browne loant over in the saddle and grabbed Hatch, whoso feet stuck in the irons momentarily, but Browne held the suspended rider till Hatch got his feet free, and then lifted him on to his own horse's neck, where he (Hatch) clung until Browne had pulled up Humorist to a walk, when Hatch dropped to tho ground uninjured. Had it not been for this prompt "circus" act, tho probabilities are that Hatch would have been badly hurt, and tho crowd gave Browne quite an ovation as he returned to tho paddock.

Mr G. L. Stead has presented the steeplechaser,. Tim Doolan, to his trainer, S. P. Casey.

The Toff, Shrill, and Kill'em have been scratched for tho Melbourne Cup," and Kilowatt has been withdrawn from tho Victoria Derby.

Biplane has been doing good work on the Flemington tracks. The Melbourne "Leader" of October 20th says that he gave every satisfaction by the manner in which lie galloped a mile in lm'in -lojsec.

Several New Zealand liorses arc engaged at the Moonec Valley Meeting, which takes place to-day. Among those in tho Moonee Valley Cup are Beltane, Kilfiinn, and The Toff.
