MONEY FOR PUBLIC WORKS.

STATEMENT BY HON. W. ERASER. (srr.ciAi to "the press.") WELLINGTON, June 27. An interesting refercnco to a matter of great public importance was mado by the Minister of Public 'Works (tho Hon. W. Fraser) in the course of his reply to a deputation last night. He did not believe, he said, that it would bo a wise policy to suspond publie works expenditure altogether, even in war time. Tho Dominion had a big burden of debt to carry, ana the way to lighten the load was to increaso fjroduction and provide means for getting produce to the markets. But he could not know vet what amount of money wouid bo placed at hi,s disposal by Parliament. and people who were inking for public works of any kind oiiuht to rriiliso the difficulties of the Government. Most of the loan money to ba raised by the Government during tho current financial year would bo require;! for war purposes. The vvnr was costing New Zealand at lenst £1,000,000 a snenth, and .JLho Governmout would t:ot find it easy to raise monoy for other purposes, though it intended to make an effort.
