MEETIXG OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. Tho Board cf Governors of the Christchurch Technical College met last evening. Present: —Messrs G. Scott (chairman), B. Seth-Smith, W. Hayward, j'ur.r,, J. R. Hayward, W. T. Robinson, "VT. Jones, J. A. Black. IT. H. Ruabxidge, J. McCullough. McGregor Wright, F. Burgoyne, C. H. Opie, 8. Bullnck, J. \V. Beaniand, S. C. Owen, W. 11. Cooper, M. Dalziel, C. .T. Uaddren G. H. Kudd, A. Williams, and H. Woriau. Tho chairman extended a welcom® to Mr McGregor Wright, a new member of tho Board. The chairman, iti hi® report, said that tha ' Board would havo liotod that in connexion with carpentry end joinery, tho Arbitration Court had been considering th© technical training of approuticce. Tho Court visited the College ou tha afternoon of May 16th, and spent an hour and a half examining tho work and discussing matters relating to tho training. Ho i/iougbi that they wore within eight of realising what thoy had. been looking forward to for some time past, viz., the provision of daytiino training for all young workers. It see mod very probable tha-fc such provision would bo made in tho Old Country at tho conclusion of "the 'war, tho agitation for it being very strong and widespread. The Financo Committee reported a balance at tho bank of £1473 103 3d. _ The report of the Appointments and Classes Committee recommended that applications be invited for tho position of instructor in agri' ilture at a esl&ry of £350 per nxnium. Tho following appointment* had been made:—Mr H. H. Stephens, parttime assistant in the EngineoTing Depart- | meat; Miss Edgar and Mies Haytn to take too art classes vacated by Mrs VAtQwork; Hiss Buckhurst to tako tha class in folk dancing vacated by Mrs Wallwork. The Director, in a return of tho numborj enrolled for the first term of thio year, saiil it would bo observed that though in some classes thoro was a regrettable falling-oil, on tho whole there lia/1 Aeon a satisfactory increase, the total number of individual e'.udentfi enrolled for last term being 1407, as compared with 1251 for the corresponding period lost yedr. Tho Education Department stated thr.t it could not soa its way to permit home science bur=aric3 to bo tenable in Christchurch. Mr Opie moved: "That this Board expresses to tho Minister ita grerit regret that l:i is unable at present to ©e© his way to allow lioma science bursarits to bo tenable in Christchurch. It desires to point out I that without exception tho teachers of homo science who have received their training in Christchurch nro successfully filling positions of responsibility and tha; with the provi- • siosi of eroehu c'nGso.3 at Canterbury ColI lege. in addition to those already provided at the Technical College r.nd Hostel, excellent facilities tor tho training of teachers i are now available in Christ church. The Board' would be glad, if on tho occasion of his next visit to Christchurch -the Minister would consent to roccive a deputation, in crder that tho matter may be placed more fully before him.'' The Wrsolation was carried, and the chairmen of committees were appointed the deputation. The chairman ciatid that at a special meeting of the commits i: had been decided that it would be inadvisable to erect a Boys' Hostel in Ensor's read. It recommended vfcai a special committee be set up to consider the foundation of an experimental hoetel for boys, and report to tho Board. Th« report was adopted.
