MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING
DARFIELD CLUB. Tiic newly-formed Darfield Miniature Rifle Club held a social in the Memorial Hall on Friday evening for the purpose of formally opening the range. There was a large gathering, guests boingr present from all parts of the district. A most enjoyable evening was spent. Prior to the euppor adjournment Miss Knight fired the first shot, and was declared by the club captain (Mr John Macgregor) to have fully sustained her reputation as a sportswoman by scoring an unmistakable bullseyc. Mr H. A. Knight (patron), in declaring the range open, referred to the importance of training young men in markmansbip. He was glad to see that the men of the district ■were eci ready to take advantage of the opportunities offered by" the building of an up-to-date ball, and hoped that the evening's gathering was but ,the forerunner of many «uch. A very large' number of our young men were on active service. Some had already returned and he trusted that before many months tie rest would be back. A proposal had been made -that, a eocial club and place of resort should be established in the hall for the us® of returned soldiers and ths young men of the district generally. -The idea was an excellent one. and quite in keeping with the objects for which the hall had been built. "He had great pleasure in declaring the rifle range open, and wished it and t£e club a successful career. The first shooting meeting was held on Satardav evening. Many of -tl*> members are novices "but some excellent scores were registered. the behest being 63. by D McLaughlin and J. F. Behrens respectively, with J. Macgregor (G2) clos* un On firing off Behrens (6*l beat McLaughlin by one point.
