A DANGEROUS CORNER

CITY COUNCIL ASKED TO ACT.

A letter was received by the City Council last night from the Linwood Citizens' Asociation, stating that they had recently written to tho Tramway Board in reference to the dangerous position of the Cashel street tramway line on the south-east corner of tho intersection of Cashel street and Stanmoro road, and tho general manager of the Hoard had replied tbat he Had been directed to write to the Council suggesting that the Council resume part of the land at the corner. The Association therefore pointed out to the Council" the danger that at present existed On account <jf the position of the line. Several accidents had already occurred at this point, and without doubt s&rioua accidents would occur in the future if the present state of things was not remedied. The owner of the property apparently was now to' sell, and no doubt the land required could bo purchased at a small cost, it was suggested that in the meantime the owner be compelled to reduce the height of the live fence that now surrounded the corner and totally obstructed theview of traffic. Or. Herbert said the corner was an exceedingly dangerous one. He moved that the YVorks Committee be instructed to inspect the spot and report to tho next meeting of tho Council. Cr. Oiley said the danger was more imaginary than real. Cr. Sullivan contended that tho corner was a veritable death-trap. Or. Jameson, .suggested that the matter be referred to tho Traffic Inspector for a report. Cr. MoCombs asked why should not the Tramway Board be asked to cooperate with the Council in tho purchase of the land? The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) said he understood the. Board had not the power to purcha.se land. Or. Burgoyne: They don't want power. The motion was carried.
