ANNIVERSARY DAY.
TO-DAY'S CELEBRATION
The 6fith anniversary of the founds* tion of the province of Canterburr is being celebrated to-day, instead of on Saturday, -which was the actual anniversary. It was in the month of September, 1850, that the latter-day Canterbury Pilnumbering one thousand souls, set sail for Gravesend . in the nowhistoric "first four shins" —the Sir George Seymour, the Charlotte Jano, the Randolph, and the Crcssy. The Charlotte Jane arrived on December 16th. This year the celebration of the province's foundation is a comparatively quiet one, and will not bo marked, as it was on past occasions, by a gathering of old colonists. In Christchurch the principal attractions -will be tramway trips to Cashmere Hills, to Sumner and New Brighton, and the second day of the New Brighton Trotting Club's Summer Meeting. There will be also railway excursions to Timaru and Little River. In town there will he matinee exhibitions at the picture* theatres, and the continuous picture theatres will also be open.
