HARBOUR BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING
The Lyttelton Barbour Board met yesterday. Present —Messrs M. J. Miller (chairman), H. JVriedlander, f. Horrcll, J. Stony, T. D. Boag. J. J.. Graham, Geo. Scott, C. Allison, J. J. Dougall. A. Kaye, H. F. Nicoll, and thc rlon. R. Moore. 'The Harbour Improvement Committee reported having deterred consideration or thc installation of Hashing lights in leading beacons until tno receipt of a quotation from Eng l ana. Tno Lnion Steam Ship Company was to be informed that t«e Boaru had decided to take no action in connexion with keeping strangers off the wharf on arrival and departure of ferry steamers. Regarding the application from the firemen on the dredge Canterbury tor increased pay, it was decided that it should be considered when the whole of tho staff salaries arc being reviewed. The report was agreed to. Thc engineer reported, with regard to the temporary leases of boat building sites, tnat, in accordance with tho instructions of tho committee appoined to carry out thc settlement or this matter, the temporary leases, in accordance with the plan and conditions agreed upon by that committee, weia ouered for sale by public auction on Tuesday, and were sold at the upset rentals as follows: —Lease A, with old Navals shed, to Miller Bros., at £60 per year; lease B, with half of Black .shed, to J. Sinclair, juur., at £23 per year; lease C, with rowing club shod, to J. D. Miller, at £45 per year. The leases would be accordingly'prepared, and possession given in about fourteen days. Members expressed their gratification with the settlement of this matter. The Harbours' Association forwarded a copy of a letter from the Secretary of Marine explaining that, in calculating tonnage on which harbour dues' arc payable by transports carrying freight-earning cargo, the dues will be proportionate to the quantity of such cargo carried. A letter from the Under-Secrctarv of Mines, enquiring what quantity of coal is held in stock by the Board."was discussed in committee. Thc director of thc Hector Observatory, Wellington, wrote advising that time signals could be sent twice a week to operate the time ball at Lyttelton. —Received. It was decided to obtain a copy of the latest balance-sheet of the Shipwreck Relief Society before deciding to give a subscription. A sum of £10 was voted to the St. John Ambulance Association. The next meetine of the Board was fixed for January 10th, 1917.
