LITTLE RIVER.
(Before Mr T. A. E. Bailey, S.M.) John Kiiii, a Maori, was charged with a broach of the Animals Protection Act, 1008, by taking eggs of native game (black swans' eggs). Sergeant Jackson, of Lyttelton, who prosecuted, stated that the defendant wa« seen coming from Lake Ellesinore with a trap, and on search being made by Constable "Whatman and Ranger •Main, black swans' eggs were found in a box in the trap^ As Kini is an old man in poor circumstances, and the eggs were taken for food, the Magistrate severely cautioned him. and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. William Spindler was charged under the Gaming Act, 1908, with playing an illegal game, to wit, a spinning Jenny on the Little River Show Ground on November 21st last. He was fined £5 and £1 (is costs. ALLEGED INCENDIARISM. (press association telecram.) DUNEDIN, December 6. John Webster has been committed for trial on a charge of setting fire to A. and J. Watts's furniture factory. Bail was refused. ECHOES OF RUA'S TRIAL. (PRISS ASBO:iATIOK TMJCGRAM.) ROTOR UA. December G. At the Magistrate's Court last night Mahia Hakeke pleaded guilty to perjury at Auckland in connexion with the Ruii eases, and was committed to Auckland for .sentence. He stated that his evidence was inspired by Wi Hape, who told him to abscond when its ialsity was discovered. Wi Hape, arrested on a charge oT secreting Mahia Hakeke. a witness in the Rua case, and getting liim away from Auckland to defeat the ends of justice, was brought before Mr Dyer, S.M., ' nii<l remanded till to-morrow morning. Tahu Hiraiwane and Tutara Kanika wore committed for trial at Hamilton for committing perjury in the Rua caso in the Auckland Supreme Court.
