CARGO IN TONGARIRO.
FURTHER, SALVAGE EFFORTS. Tenders are being called by Lloyd's for the work of salving the cargo remaining in the 6unken steamer Tongariro, and also the ship's fittings. The Tongariro was wrecked on Bull Bock, near Portland Island, on September Ist. The salving of the cargo was placed in the hands of the Richardson Shipping Company, who had to abandon further efforts when the vessel 6ank a week or so later. About 350 tons, consisting mainly of oils and paints, were salved out of a total general cargo of 8000 tons. Later a diver descended to examine the wreck, and reported that the sides of the hull had been burst open, and the decks had collapsed. The underwriters believe that more cargo can be salved. Any tenders that are submitted will be cabled to headquarters immediately.
