AX ANIMATED DAY. SEVEXTT-rtfO ENLISTMENTS. As was anticipated, the recruiting became animated yesterday, 72 men registering for active service. They comprised 48 single and 22 married men, two applicants not stating their condition. According to a progress report issued by the Canterbury District Headquarters Office, there wore available in the :iistrict at the end of last week 34-1 infantry for the 18th Reinforcements. ■ : ) for the 19th. THE LYTTELTON CANVASS

The Mayor of Lvttelton (Mr W. Radcliffe) reported to tho Borough Council at last night's meeting that, in pursuance of a motion passed at a rccont public meeting, two canvassers had been engaged to interview all eligible men in tho district in connexion with the Government recruiting scheme. Tbe canvassers commenced tho work last week, and were doing well. Three hundred and twentyseven houses had been visited, and of 711 men whose names wore on tho National Register 292 had already been approached. The canvassing had nlso resulted in the discorerv so far of ,<U men whoso names were not on the Rational Register.
