Bryce drove Admiral Wood, and Antonio to victory, and also trained Mintson, another winner, at the Winter Meeting of the Canterbury Park Club. Mr T. Sheen was the onl; owner to win more than one race at the Canterbury Park Meeting. Admiral Wood and Mintson each started once, and each was successful. In the sixteen races on the programme at Canterbury Park last week, Antonio was the only scratch horse to win a race. clearly showing what a hard task the back markers have to be succcssful. , Mr G. D. Greenwood sailed for Australia by the Manuka on Friday, and it is understood that the Martian horse, Danube, was taken across at the same time, en route for Mr Greenwood's estate in Queensland. M. Edwards was the most successful reinsman at the Canterbury Park Meeting, annexing three races with John Dillon, King Capitalist, and Maori Princess, and gaining second place with Adelaide Direct. Polymelus. sire of Fifinella, winner °f this ypar's Derby and Oaks, and Pommen, last season's Derby winner, is by Cvllene—Maid Marion, and is therefore a*half-brother to Grafton, who was so successful at tho stud in Australia. Nominations for several of the leading events of the Australian Jockey Club (including the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps); of the Victoria Racing Club (including the Melbourne Cup), -and of the Western Australian Turf Club close to-day. Diavolo. who has not raccd since he returned from Melbourne, where he met with severe injuries, has apparently recovorcd, for he has been engaged at the Giisborne Meeting, and is top-weight in the Park Hurdles. He is also entered for the Winter Oats Handicap. Slogan and the Glenapp-Ecarte two-year-old gelding who have been hacked about during the past three weeks are once more attendants at the tracks at Riccarton, under F. Christmas's care. Their owner, Mr D. H. Roberts, was present yesterday morning .to see them work. - Prior to his departure for Trentham to join the 17th Reinforcements, A. D. Chapman was entertained at a social gathering of his numerous friends at the Southern Cross Hotel. During the evening he was presented with a set of pipes by his admirers, and with a tobacco pouch, the gift of Mrs T. G. Fox. Acceptances for the Ashburton Trotting Club's Winter Meeting are due at 9 o'clock this evening. The Club has, as usual, made arrangements for a special train service for Thursday's Meeting. There will be two special trains from Christchurch at 9.30 and 9.50 a.m., returning from Ashburton at 5.5 and 5.18 p.m. Some corrections are necessary in the handicaps for the Ashburton T.C.'s Winter Meeting published yesterday morning. In the Longbeach Handicap Lavinia has 14sec. In the President's Handicap Sergeant Havelock has 14sec, Patard 19sec, and Lavinia 19sec. In the Actou Handicap Harold Devon has 3sec; ana in the Winter Handicap Bingana has 4sec. M. Hobbs leaves for Australia by to-morrow's boat, and will take six horses with him, including Reval. Silent Way, Corrie. Peg, Deltonio, and Down. All have been doing steady work, and should soon strike form on the other side of the water. Dan Cameron is to be qualified as a huntei* in the near future. The Euroclydo'n gelding in F. D. Jones's stable ■yas out with the pack at Racecourse Hill on Saturday. El Galio's performance in winning the Great Northern, Hurdle Race and Steeplechase double two years in suc-

cession is unequalled in the history of those two important jumping races, and it will probably be a long time before it is again accomplished. When El Gallo was successful in these races last year he registered a performance that bad been accomplished only once before. That was in 1595, when that great jumper Liberator, who TO ridden by F. Holmes, won both, races for Mr "Patsy" Butler. Carnmore, the winner of the Otago Steeplechase last week, is by Golden Vein, a useful performer in Sir George Clifford's colours. Golden Vein was a member of the Clanranald —Golden Crest, family, to which Golden Fleece (who raced in Australia and has produced winners m Adelaide), Golaenliuret, Golden Vale, and Gold Leaf (all by Stonyhurst) belonged. Golden Vein is a full-brother to Chryseis, Bonnie Brae, and Golden Cairn, and half-bro-ther to Cresset and Avarice (by Treadmill). Carnmore won tho Hack Steeplechase, two miles, on the second day of the Riverton Meeting at Easter. A.-Goodwin, who left for Sydney on Saturday with a team of jumpers, also made the trip to Victoria with the first lot of jumpers the late Mr William Douglas, of Hawke'e Bay, sent across. The team consisted of Montrose 11., Kapo, Jupiter, and The Peer. Jupiter fell in tho Grand National Steeplechase, but tho same afternoon won the Flemington Steeplechase, of 300 sovs, two miles. Goodwin is taking his two sons with, him, and they will ride the horses in their engagements. The trip will be rather a hurried one, and will practically be.confined to the V.R.C. Grand National Meeting. Tho team, which, includes Morning, is due back at the C.J.C. Grand National Meeting in August.
