RECRUITING.

SEVENTEENTH

BEISTOKCE3IENTS

DEPARTURE OF CHRISTCHURC-H

QUOTA

THIRTY OVER STRENGTH,

One of the> largest quotas which has ever loft Christchurch was that despatched last night as the city's chare of the 17th Reinforcements. It was 30 over strength, which, with the assistance given by the other group areas in the Canterbury military district, -will grcatJy assist in'wiping off the debit against the province in connexion with the raising of previous reinforcements. Yesterday afternoon the local recruiting officers had secured 182 men for the Christchurch Infantry draft, 53 over the t required number, but 24 men failed to answer the roll, the surplus to 29. Following were the drafts required, ti'.e number notified to parade, and the number who answered the roll call: — Draft. Quota, Secured. Artillery .. I i o •Signal Service 1 1 1 Infantry .. 13U 10i JGB Totals .. Hi 108 17t M ith the dralt went nine non-com-missioned officers (on probation) lor the JDth Reinforcements. Another man notified failed to put in an appearance. The quota was oue of the strongest numerically which lias ever been despatched lrom Christchurch, but the physical standard of the men as a whole did not compare too favourably with some previous dralis. There seemed to be too many young lads in the ranks. Before leaving the Barracks the m-jn were briefly addressed by the Mayor (Mr H. Ho!!::nd) and Colonel Chaffev, officer commanding the district. Colonel Chaffey, in the course of his remarks, stated that- it only required sisurplus from Cantrrbujy the next iivno to wipe out the ; deficit existing through the. shortages in previous quotas, anl thus remove the stigma at present resting on the name of the province.

j Escorted by the C.D.C. and C.Y.C. Bands and the C.D.C., the men marched to the OJin.stchtirch railway station, where the;- boarded at 7.45 15.ni. a special train for Lyttelton. They left for Wellington in charge of Lieutenant .Livingstone, assisted by Lieutenant Warman and Sergeant Minolinn. There were, largo crowds in the streets to witness the men depart, but Jit-tle enthusiasm was shown. On the occasion of the departure of nearly every Reinforcement draft from Christchurch there has l>een a decided drop»in-recruiting for a few days, and there has been a reaction again this time. The present comparative slackness will really be welcomed by the recruiting officers in this city, as it will give them au opportunity to remove to their new quarters without having their hands full. with, enlistments. If previous experience is to be taken as a guide, recruiting for the. 18tlx Reinforcements should begin in earnest early next week, when it is anticipated that the heavy enlistments recorded last week will be''maintained, if not exceeded. Already 80 men have been secured in Christchurch for the 18th Reinforcements, so >uat if the same ' number for the 17ths. viz. 139, is only required, there should be no difficulty in securing the full number of men. j In order, however, to wine out the j shortages existing in previous Canter- ! bury quotas, and likewise to remove ; t'ie stigma resting upon the name of j the province, it is essential thai f ar

more than the number of men asked for should be obtained. Yesterday there were 46 enlistments in Christchurch. comprising five by married men and 30 by single. A question relating to tho cases of men requiring operations to make them fit for activo service was .asked in the House to-day by Mi- J. Vigor Brown. He drew attention to a recent circular which he said had been sent out by the Recruiting Board to the effect'that men undergoing certain operations would not be allowed to join the force for six months afterwards. Tho Minister of Defence said that the circular referred to what were known as minor operations for complaints such as varicocele, yaricose veins, and others. In many cases tho men, after treatment for such complaints, were found to be unfit for scrvice. The Recruiting Board, thereforo, had decided that it could not enter into any obligations in regard to these men unless it could be shown, after treatment, that they were actually fit for service. Experience had shown that many of these men wero not fit for service for at least six months after operations. Dr. Thacker: One month is qtiite sufficient. . x Mi- Allen : The hon. gentleman is a medical man, and of course I bow to his superior knowledge, but the decision of the Recruiting Board is based upon the opinion of Surgeon-General Henderson, Director of Military Services, who was brought out from Home for the purpose of advising the Government on such matters. He says that a period of at least six months is necessary. >
