MR J. J. HILL. (By Cablo.—Press Association.—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 20, ' The death is announced of Mr James J. Hill, the American "Railway King, ' at St. Paul, Minnesota. James J. Hill was bora in Upper Canada in 1833. After seveial years in steamboat offices in St. Paul' he established a fuel and transportation business about 1565. and in it>7o and 1873 he established the lied River Transportation Company and tne North Western Fuel Company. In 1877 he organised the syndicate which secured the control of tne St. Paul and Pacific Railroad from the Dutch shareholders, and reorganised the system as the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad. He was general manager 1879-81, vice-president 1831-I', and president 1882. It became part of his great northern system in 1390, .rf which he was till 1907. and chairman of the Board of directors till 1912. when he retired from active work. He covered Noith Canada with railways. enormously developing Tts resources. CAPTAIN RICHARD TODD. * (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NAPIER, May 30. The death is announced of Captain Richard Todd, Superintendent of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, aged 71. Captain Todd was a well known and popular commander. He served his apprenticeship in the East India trade, and for 20 years, ending 1887. commanded ships of the Shaw Sari 11 Company in the New Zealand trade. In 1887 he was appointed marine superintendent to the Tyser Line (now the Commonwealth and Dominion Line), and Colonial Superintendent, on the death of Mr Robert Dobson, in 1893. He was highly esteemed and exceedingly popular in Napier, where he had resided for many years.
