CASUALTIES.
The police received word on Saturday from Rothcrham that, the body of a man, as yet unidentified, had been found in the Waiau river, some ten miles away. From appearances the body had been in the water for six or eight weeks. \ On Saturday morning, soon after starting work, Mr J. Watson, a'member of tho firm" of Messrs J. Watson and .Son, snwmiilers and joiners, Tuam street, bv some means got his left hand caught in the machinery, and had one finger badly mutilated. He was at once conveyed t 0 the Hospital. A man named H. Wilkinson, while riding a. bicycle in the city shortly after o."30 p.m. on Saturday, was run into by a motor-car. He was struck from behind, and when examined at the Hospital was found to be suffering from a c'Jslocatcd shoulder. He was attended to, ajid then sent to his home. A little girl, six years of a£e. named Irene Frances Ryder, of York street, Opawa, was brought into the Christchurch Hospital about 1.30 p.m.'yesterday, suffering from severe bums on the left leg and arm, as a result of playing with matches. The child's clothing' was blazing, but her father succeeded in smothering the flames before she had been more severely burned. J. Sullivan, of Clothier street, Linwood, met with an accident in his garden yesterday by falling on a broken bottle, receiving severe cuts on his right band and arm. He got out his motor-cycle anfl rode to the Hospital for treatment, losing a great deal of blood on the way. It was found necessary to administer an anaesthetic,the wounds being serious. (press association telegram.) CARTERTON, January 16. William Charles Zabel, aged 43 years, a dairy farmer, committed suicide last night by shooting' himself with a shotgun. He leaves a wife and five children. j
