FIRES

At an early hour on Saturday morning an eitrht-roomod two-storeyed wooden building, situated on the St. Martin's road, was destroyed by fire. The house had been unoccupied for some time, and when the fire was discovered by Miss Davis, a neighbour, tho flames hail a good hold. As the Fire Brigade could not be called upon, being outside the boundary, very little chance remained for a willing band of volunteers to save the building, which was owned by Mrs J. Wyllie. who had it insured in the London and Lancashire office for £650. A seven-roomed two-storeyed house, situated in Hood street. New Brighton, was, together with its contents, totally destroyed by fire at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The house was owned by Mr Whale, of Christehurcb, and was occupied by the Misses Day, Mrs Edmonds, Mrs Whale and family. The outbreak occurred during the absence of the inmates, who -were bathing. The Fire Brigade turned out, but was unable to do other than save the adjoining premises. The building, which wai a very old one, was insured. Last night the Fire Brigade attended at the Farmers' Co-op. motor garaee, where an incipient fire had been discovered. It is presumed that a light was left on a bench, which ignited a pair of overalls lying near. The loss of the garment was the only damage. The Lyttclton Fire Brigade received a call at 2.15 p.m. yesterday to a grass firo in the rear of Mr Mahar's premises at Westi Lyttelton. The outbreak was subdued before any damage was done.
