As organiser for the North Canterbury Recruiting Board, Mr F. W. Johnston attended a meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council last to assist with the formation of a Recruiting Board for the borough. So read a circular letter which had been sent out by the North Canterbury Board, setting forth the objects and the proposed modus operandi of tho Board. The first thing to do, he said, I was to elect a committee to compile a list of the men in the borough who had no ties, and who were eligible for service. He pointed, out that the .Council need have no /oar that the work they would do would be upset by the Government when the new scheme came into oDeration becauso the work pf the Board would have the full sanction of the Government. He strongly urged the Rangiora Board, when formed, to undertake its own recruiting. After congratulating the borough on the result of the recruiting rally, Mr Johnston said'it only remained for everyone to do his best for the voluntary system, and when the time came for universal service or conscription, it would come in automatically and with, a minimum of opnosition. The Mayor said the time had come for a oersonal canvass of .the district. Cr. McGruer said the borough should combine with- the county council to form a Recruiting Board. Ho moved "that the Mayor call a meeting of the two bodies for the purpose. Cr. Lane said he hoped the voluntary system wonld be given a fair chance. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr Johnston afterwards attended a meeting of the Rangiora County Council. and placed his proposition before it. The meeting aerreed to combine with the Council in the matter. AX APPRECIATION. Owing to the para-graph published with regard to the magnitude of the work done for recruiting and in aasisting soldiers by tho CJD.C., a gentleman has handed in a chegue. toz £20 towards the corps' funds.
