QUEEN ELECTION.
TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES' UNION. MEN RECOMMENDED NOT TO ASSIST. At a general meeting of the Christchurch Tramway Employees' Union at. tho Trades Hall on Tuesday night the .following motion was carried:— "That the members of the union be recommended to refrain from taking any part in tho Queen competition contest which has been inaugurated for tho purpose of raising money to supplement tho Canterbury Patriotic Tho secretary of the union, in sending us a report of the meeting, appended tho following comment to the resolution :—' 'Tho union is of the opinion that tho Government should levy taxation, direct, for the purpose of covering all the sums required to meet the expenditure in connexion with tho war, including the provision of a proper standard of comfort for those who are fighting the battles of the Empire, and to provide their dependents with at least that standard of comfort which the departed breadwinner was able and willing to provide them with before he enlisted." ENGINEERING SECTION. A meeting of the Executive and General Committee of the Engineers' Branch of the Industrial Section was held last evening. . Favourable reports were received regarding donations from the employees of Messrs Booth, Macdonald and Co., Cooper and Duncan, • and Andersons, Ltd. The matter of interviewing tho employees of several other firms was left in the hands of a special Visiting Committee. An Auction Committee was appointed to arrange for auction sales to be held from tune to time—preforably in Cathedral square. Several gentlemen in the room promised substantial donations. An Art Union Committee was formed to arrange for tho disposal of a motorcar.
A general meeting of members of the ! timber, building, and furniture trades, in connexion with, the Industries Section of the Queen Election, -will be held to-morrow evening at the Art Gallery, commencing at eight o'clock. . The following meetings in connexion with -the Queen Election will be held at the Art Gallery:—Monday,, 17th, Banks, Insurance, Financial Agents, and Accountants; Tuesday, Doctors, Dentists, and Chemists; Thursday, Newspaper Offices, Sharebrokers, Shipping, and Grain.. Merchants. On the 17th the Industries Section meets in the Chamber of Commerce..
