BISHOP GRIMES'S BEQUESTS.

MOXSIGNOR BRODIE'S GIFT TO cathedral FUND. At the meeting of the Executive Coinmi ttco held last night in connexion with tho rcccption of his !Lxcelloncy Archbishop Ccrrotti. apostolic delegate, The Rev. Chancellor Price announced that Monsignor Brodie had decided to devote tho bequest mado to his successor bv tho luto Bishop Giimcs to tlic fund for tho extinguishing of the debt on the Cathedral. Bishop Grimes's estato was sworn at £11,000. Estate dutv arid bequests made the residue about €8000, which was to bo divided between the Superior of the Manst Order to which the late Bishop belonged and his successor in the Cliristchurch' See. From this it had been agreed that £1700 for the now high altar for the Cathedral, together with the mosaic pavement oL the sanctuary should bo paid. Tlic residue would then go to the two beneficiaries named, and Monsignor Brodie was going to give tho wholo of his legacy to the reduction of the Cathedral debt, now standing at £4850, thus very materially reducing it. Tho meeting considered that after tho consecration of Bishop Brodic on Sunday, February 27tli. tlierc should be presented to him, at a conversazione ,pn the Monday night, a purse reprcscntinfs tho goodwill of the people of tho diocese, and it was resolved to submit the matter to tho assembled clergy who -will be here for tho retreat and through them to tho laity of the various parishes. . . A considerable gathering of distinguished prelates is expected at the consecration. Already Archbishop Carr of Melbourne, Bishop Phelan, of Sale," Bishop Revell. of Sandhurst, and Dr. Ormond, secretary to tho Apostolic Delegate, are in tho North Island.
