A MOTOR SMASH.

WOMAN KNOCKED DOWN. As a Papanui tram-car which, left the Square about 11 o'clock on Monday evening was pulled at the corner of Holly road, a passenger, Nurse Rankin, alighted and crossed in front of it. Scarcely had" she got clear of the lines when a motor-car passing on tho outside came into collision with her, ■with the result, that she was removed to tho Hospital,'where she now lies in a semiconscious condition^ One of the passengers on the car says: "I was sitting facing the rear as the car stopped at Holly road, and saw the motor-car coming at a fast pace. ' I could. see by the expression on the face of the people in motor that they recognised a collision was inevitable. A man and a woman were in the motor, and I think the woman went- to stand up. The next thing was that someone shouted 'She's down,' and we could see that a woman had bean run over. The motor swerved in an effort to avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful, and when it was all over the woman was, lying in the gutter quite still and unconscious, and the car bad come to - a standstill on the footpath a little distance away. The driver erdeavoured to avoid the woman, but. the pace at which lie was going, was toe gr»at to allow him to pull up 111 time.'' . Another eye-witiiesa of the accident stated that the motor-car was going at fully 2o miles per hour, and he heard no horn blown at'all. The ear swerved widely to avoid Nurse Rai:kin, but failed to do so, and after striking her, carried her across the remaining width of the road, eventually running right utv on the footpath, straddling the gutter. " The witness ran off to Dr. Gibson, who, when he came, ordered the ambulance to be called, p.nd Nurse Rankin was taken to the Hospital. The police state that the driver of the car was Mr R. C. Chapman, of West Eyreton. who called at "the Police Station yesterday and gave in his name.
